Mk 19 grenade launcher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mk 19 is a man-portable crew-served weapon that can fire from a tripod mounted position or from a vehicle mount (this being the preferred method as the weapon alone weighs 33 kg).
The primary ammunition for Mk 19 is the high explosive dual-purpose M430 grenade.
The Mk 19 is made by General Dynamics and Saco Defense Industries.

Modern Firearms - Mk.19 automatic grenade launcher / grenade machine gun
Development of the Mark 19 (Mk.19 in short) grenade machine gun was initiated by US Navy in 1966, after the initial experience gained during Vietnam war.
Among these, most notable was the Mark 18 belt-fed grenade launcher, developed by Hughes corporation; this was a hand-cranked weapon that provided significant short-range firepower to riverine crafts and marine infantry.
Development of Mark 19 automatic grenade launcher began in July 1966, and by October 1967 firs three working prototypes of the new weapon were ready for official field trials.

A Brief History of the Burlham Safety Post
The Mk 19 Grenade Launcher is an automatic weapon that rapidly fires 16 ounce high explosive rounds which detonate on impact.
The action of the Mk 19 is spring-based vs. reciprocating, so when early versions of the gun were transported on rough terrain with the weapon pointed into the sky, it occasionally discharged into the air, sometimes with fatal results.
The barrel of the Mk 19 was designed short so that the round would exit the weapon at the maximum velocity.

The OCSW was originally intended to replace both the.50 HMG and the 40mm HV Mk-19 Grenade launcher.
The grenade round would use a case that externally matches the dimensions of the.50 BHMG round but mounting the same grenade as has been developed for the OCSW.
The answer is that the Payload rifle projectiles would be too long, but this did suggest to me that a 25-28mm weapon with canister and explosive rounds would prove to be a very useful CQB and MOUT weapon, and would nicely complement the Recoilless Grenade Launchers that I've proposed.

All three of the weapon systems are connected to a central Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) that gives the gunner the option of firing each weapon with the flick of a switch and automatically gauges the range of the target by using an eye-safe laser range finder.
When the gunner flips a switch on the control panel and charges the weapon of choice, the display will change for the particular weapon and will show the sights for that weapon.
In older systems, the gunner would have to "walk in" the grenades when firing the MK-19, which means it would take several shots to hit the target.

 HKPRO:  The 40mm GMG
(Granat Maschinengewehr) This high impulse 40mm grenade launcher is a direct competitor to the Mark 19, currently in service with the U.S. military.
It is distinguishable in that HK made a belt that would allow the firer to load belts of grenades from either the right or left side of the gun, making the system totally ambidextrous.
The gun is prominently featured in HK's newest promotional video called "The HK Weapon System." It was torture tested in 1997 in the Yuma, Arizona desert as part of trials necessary to compete for future U.S. military contracts.

 Defense Tech: ONE BAD HUMMER
Traditionally, Humvees come armed with a single weapon -- a big machine gun, say, or a grenade launcher.
But a new Hummer, developed by the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, "may put the firepower of an entire heavy-weapons platoon into one vehicle," according to an Army news release.
Plans for the tactical version include a smaller, collapsible turret, removable composite armor plating, undercarriage protection from mines, a smaller targeting screen, and the gunner’s seat may be moved to the rear of the vehicle to allow for another team member and lower the distractions for both the gunner and the commander.
