Torpedoes and the Next Generation of Undersea Weapons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
From submarine warfare to warship design and tactics development, the modern torpedo is one of the fundamental drivers of 20th century naval warfare.
This would provide the torpedo more "bang for the buck," and provide the potential for weapons to be smaller and lighter, with increased range capability or room for additional sensors and signal processing.
Using "supercavitation" techniques, the torpedo becomes an underwater missile… the water near the tip of the projectile — or torpedo — literally vaporizes from the high speed, producing a pocket in which to "fly" the weapon underwater.

 MK-48 Torpedo
Torpedoes are self-propelled guided projectiles that operate underwater and are designed to detonate on contact or in proximity to a target.
The three major torpedoes in the Navy inventory are the Mark 48 heavyweight torpedo, the Mark 46 lightweight and the Mark 50 advanced lightweight.
The wire is severed and the torpedo's high-powered active/passive sonar guides the torpedo during the final attack.

BRIEFING: Mk48 heavyweight torpedoes are used solely by submarines and are employed as the primary ASW and ASUW weapon in attack submarines and as the principal defensive weapon in strategic ballistic-missile submarines.
Mk48 ADCAP: The Mk48 Mod 5 ADCAP torpedo is the ultimate replacement for the Mk48 Mod 4 torpedo.

How's this for an anti-ship weapon? [Archive] - SpaceBattles.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Mk48 seeker has an acquisition range of 4,000 yards, which is very good for a torpedo, but that means it would need to be dropped into the water much closer then that to have any chance of finding a target.
This issue of actually dropping the torpedo into the water, combined with the absolutely horrendous issues of targeting a missile torpedo combo and the very high cost of the system makes it a generally bad idea.
Torpedoes are the most expensive munitions around, the price tag of an Mk48 is more then 2 million dollars, enough money to buy several Tomahawk cruise missiles.

If so, the torpedo would have to be made smart enough to know which 'side' is up and be 'self righting', unless it is always loaded and fired with a particular 'side' up ('side' is a strange term considering we're talking about a round object ;-).
Regarding the US Torpedo, I don't know for sure, but I would assume that the shaped charge design would be solely for use against subs, whereas creating a large air cavity under a ship with a more normal explosion on ships would make sense.
Needless to say when firing a torpedo at a ship you will know its draught and therefore know the depth to set the torpedo to run at to go under the ship.

His product knowledge and the fact that both the lightweight (MK46) and heavyweight (MK48 and ADCAP) torpedoes are assembled in Cleveland (whereby allowing OTS close proximity to the actual manufacturers of the components) proved to be a successful combination in supplying our foreign and domestic customers over the past ten years.
OTS' interest in the MK32 torpedo launch system evolved as an outgrowth of the work with the MK46 torpedo and as a result of being both a supplier and customer of Plessey Naval Systems, Carlsbad, California (the predecessor to today's GEC Marconi Naval Systems…the OEM to this product line).
Though our primary product base is with torpedoes and related equipment, we find that many of the projects with which we are involved utilize technologies and techniques applicable to both governmental and commercial applications.

This new German torpedo, the Barracuda is supposedly faster Shkval, maneuverable and accurate unlike the Shkval and consequently is claimed to be able to intercept the Shkval and other torpedo.
The Shkval is the first use of supercavitational technology in modern weapons and represents perhaps the largest leap forward in underwater warfare since the invention of the submarine itself.
Other possibilities include high-velocity antiship and antitorpedo torpedoes and "midrange unguided engagement breakers," which are larger weapons intended to force an end to a conflict between two submarines.
