Torr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The torr (symbol: Torr) or millimetre of mercury (mmHg) is a non-SI unit of pressure.
Because the standard atmosphere has been precisely defined (10th CGPM, 1954), and the standard atmosphere had previously been defined as 760 mmHg exactly, those two definitions are now combined to define the torr as exactly 101325/760 ≈ 133.3223684 pascals.
Although they are synonyms in practice, the torr and millimetre of mercury are very slightly different by virtue of their definitions in British Standard BS 2520 ([1], [2]).

 Vapor Pressure
At this point the vapor is said to be saturated, and the pressure of that vapor (usually expressed in mmHg) is called the saturated vapor pressure.
The standard boiling point for water at 100°C is for standard atmospheric pressure, 760 mmHg.
Raising or lowering the pressure by about 28 mmHg will change the boiling point by 1°C. Although the vapor pressure variation with temperature is a non-linear one, the boiling point variation can be approximated near 100°C by an empirical fit of the available data.

White Coat Hypertension in Black Females   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The prevalence of white coat hypertension in the fl and female populations is currently not well known and its relationship to the development of sustained hypertension and subsequent cardiovascular disease is a subject of significant debate.
In terms of classification, patients with a difference of at least 20 mmHg SBP or 10 mmHg DBP from the average of the three office blood pressure measurements taken immediately prior to attachment of the ABPM to the patient minus the average awake ambulatory blood pressure (see Formula 1) were labeled as white coat hypertensives.
The average of the three pre-monitor DBP measurements minus the average awake DBP was greater than 10 mmHg in all subjects in the white coat group.

Hypertension is defined as a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or higher and/or a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or higher.
The result for the second group was that the average systolic blood pressure declined from 149.0 to 137.8, and the diastolic declined from 95.5 to 89.5 mmHg., decreases of 11.2/6.0 mmHg.
The analysis of blood pressure variability from beat to beat, by Fourier analyses, indicated a decrease in sympathetic activity and an increase in parasympathetic activity, and was interpreted as contributing to a decrease in peripheral resistance, thus participating in the decline in systolic blood pressure.

McDougall Newsletter - Over-treat Your Blood Pressure and You Could Die Sooner
For example, over a 3-year period, men (40 to 59 years old) were found to have a 21% risk of death from stroke and a 20% risk of death from a heart attack even though their pressure was reduced from 183/114 mmHg to a level of 149/91 mmHg with medications.
A study of 22,576 patients treated for hypertension showed that the death rate dropped until a nadir (lowest point) was reached at a diastolic pressure of 84 mmHg.
For example, those with a diastolic of 70 mmHg had 20% greater risk, at 65 mmHg the risk was 80% greater, and at 55 mmHg the risk was four times higher than at 84 mmHg.

The SBP, DBP and MBP were significantly higher (unpaired Student t-test) during the light period (125 ± 21, 88 ± 15 and 100 ± 17 mmHg, respectively) than during the dark period (120 ± 21, 85 ± 17 and 97 ± 17 mmHg, respectively) and the acrophase occurred between 16:00 and 17:45 h.
Both feeding and moving induced an increase in MBP (96 ± 17 to 119 ± 17 mmHg at 17:00 h and 97 ± 19 to 105 ± 12 mmHg at 15:00 h, respectively).
The results show that conscious sloths present biphasic circadian fluctuations in BP levels, which are higher during the light period and are mainly synchronized with feeding.

1999 Abstract 134   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hemodynamic and metabolic effects of increasing PP pressure and to define the limits of the CO insufflation in a controlled hemorrhage rat model.
Higher PP pressure (15 mmHg) produced a significant decline in MAP (42%, p< 0.00 1) and progressive metabolic acidosis with a 2.1 fold increase (p<0.01) in lactate level.
The more severe hemorrhage (15 ml/kg) further reduced the limits of PP pressure such that 10 and 15 mmHg resulted in a progressive decline of blood pressures (52% and 54%, p<0.001) and severe metabolic acidosis as manifested by a 3.3 and 3.1 fold rises in lactate levels, respectively.

The report suggests that for every 20/10 mmHg increment in blood pressure above this new safe level there is a doubling in the risk of cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack, stroke, and other blood vessel disorders.
Currently, the Australian Heart Foundation defines optimal blood pressure as less than 120/80 mmHg, while their definition of high blood pressure — above 140/90 mmHg — is based on the level above which treatment is recommended.
The US committee’s report also includes a recommendation that people with a blood pressure reading between 120/80 and 139/89 mmHg be considered ‘pre-hypertensive’ and be advised to make health-promoting lifestyle changes to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Genes can individualize treatment for high blood pressure
The study involved 1,162 hypertensive white men and women from Rochester, Minn. Hypertension is systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) of 140 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) or higher, or diastolic pressure (bottom number) of 90 mmHg or higher.
Participants with the ADD2 gene who were taking beta blockers had an average systolic blood pressure of 133 mmHg, compared to 158 mmHg for participants not taking medications and 146 mmHg for those treated with diuretics only.
Participants with a SNP in SLC9A2 and being treated with beta-blockers averaged 72 mmHg diastolic blood pressure, compared to 93 mmHg for those with the same SNP taking only calcium channel blockers and 84 mmHg for people only on RAS inhibitor therapy.

 Low blood pressure
The higher your blood pressure, the higher your risk of heart disease and stroke, whatever your level is. This means that someone with a blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg is at greater risk than someone with a blood pressure of 110/70 mmHg.
This is why it is so important for everyone to lead a healthy lifestyle to make sure that their blood pressure is as low and as healthy as it can be.
Until recently, normal blood pressure was considered to be the average blood pressure of the population, ie, in the UK the average adult blood pressure is approx 125/80 mmHg.
