Johnston's move to Rangers caused him to be ''one of the most controversial figures in Celtic's history, nevertheless in almost every match he played for Celtic, and his other clubs, [he] was a model professional," according to the club guide ''A Celtic A-Z."
Johnston, 42, replaced Bob Bradley Oct. 4 and rallied the MetroStars to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

ESPN.com Soccernet Scotland: News - Mo bubbling over at Coisty's retirement
Down the line from Kansas yesterday, Maurice Johnston was as dogmatic as he was in the Everton Press lounge a decade ago - Ally McCoist was a contributory factor in both his arrival and his departure from Rangers.
After all, Johnston explains, there is a crate of champagne riding on a long-standing wager on who would be the last man standing.
Johnston is the younger man by six months but the fact he is toning up his muscles for another season while McCoist and Gough hang up their boots would have been considered little short of astonishing had it been forecast 15 years ago.

Johnston was the first Roman Catholic to play for the team.
Not only was this shocking in the religiously-divided football of Glasgow, but having played for Ranger's arch-rival, Celtic, Johnston was regarded as a traitor by the Celtic supporters as well as being disliked by many of Ranger's own supporters.
Johnston was capped on 37 occasions for Scotland between 1984 and 1990, forming a goal-scoring partnership with Ally McCoist (b.1962).

Johnston, battling a bum knee, had difficulty summoning up the game which, in the 1980s and early '90s, made him one of the best Scottish players.
A large reason for Johnston's move to America was to escape the furor that had erupted when, in the late 1980s, the former scoring star for Celtic, Glasgow's Catholic club, joined Rangers, the city's Protestant team.
That made Johnston the first Catholic to play for Rangers since World War I. Johnston could walk the streets of Kansas City anonymously, instead of receiving death threats from Celtic loyalists and having to travel with bodyguards.
