Topic: Moammar Ghadafi

In the News (Sun 23 Nov 08)

  GOPUSA - Carol Devine-Molin
To continue with the saga of Colonel Moammar al-Ghadafi, he was hard-pressed to maintain Libya's status quo once 9/11 occurred -- The Iraq War was in the works and the days of his brethren Saddam Hussein were undoubtedly numbered.
The notorious Ghadafi, known for his own WMDs and sponsorship of terror, understood that some semblance of change was required for his survival, as he shrewdly sought diplomatic intervention that would ensure his continuity of rule.
Ghadafi claims he'll forgo the pursuit of WMDs, including nuclear, chemical and long-range missile programs, and permit ongoing international weapons inspections in Libya for verification purposes.

At the direction of Col. Ghadafi, himself, Libyan officials have provided American and British officers with documentation on that country's chemical, biological, nuclear and ballistic missile programs and activities.

 Another Twist on figure concord
Moammar Ghadafi's announcement to voluntarily disarm last year was a breathtaking, if jolting, spot of good news.
The Ghadafis are either very, very interested in the prosperity and stability possible with liberty or are very, very afraid of President Bush.
But whatever their motivation, the dividends are already visible in Libya's disarmament, and the world is in a far better circumstance when a hardened dictatorship publicly considers giving the country's keys to its people.

At the same time, Col. Ghadafi, hosting a semiannual meeting of the African Union's 53 member governments in Libya, urged his fellow African leaders to come together, solve their own problems and stop "begging" for outside aid.
Ghadafi's longstanding opposition to Western involvement of any kind in the continent, his comments express an extreme answer to a question many ask: At a time when the wealthy nations are remarkably united in their desire to help Africa, what's the best way to do it?

Western nations are putting way too much power in the hands of old pariahs, waiting on them to give or withhold cooperation on individual issues, and then pouring money into their coffers, while they are obviously only serving their personal interests.
