Mobb Deep became widely known from coast to coast for its hellishly lyrical depiction of New York street life in Queensbridge, the rough housing project the duo called home.
The street-credibility challenging incident led to some publicity for Mobb Deep, who were unwillingly thrown into the spotlight with New York's biggest rappers at the time, Nas and Jay-Z. At the Hot 97 Summer Jam show of 2001, Jay-Z performed the freestyle "Takeover", which he later recorded for the The Blueprint, dissing Prodigy.
But for unknown reasons, Mobb Deep has recently cut its ties with The Game, and has signed with 50 Cent's G-Unit Records, perhaps in hopes of reclaiming their status, but many of the Mobb's original fans are disappointed as G-Unit is known for their mainstream pop crossover music.

However, by the late '90s, Mobb Deep was no longer setting trends; in fact, they seemed to be following them, and they lost some of their stature as subsequent generations of hardcore rappers arose.
For a few years, Mobb Deep struggled to reclaim their commercial standing, until they eventually drifted into the G-Unit camp, where they signed a lucrative deal to join 50 Cent and company.
Mobb Deep now had significant competition, and since Murda Muzik offered few innovations and lacked the spark of the duo's past two albums, it was met with some disappointment.

Mobb Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mobb Music is a style of West Coast rap music that began in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1980s.
While the classic Mobb albums still sell very well throughout Northern California, commercially it has been replaced in the region by a new form of bay area rap music called hyphy rap, which has a faster tempo and fits in better with current commercial trends.
Many of the big artists from the golden era of Mobb Music are now adapting to the current format of bay area rap music, particularly the original pioneers of Mobb Music, E-40 and Too Short.

Mobb Deep was the dangerously low growl of two alley-dogs caught in a dead-end, facing imminent death.
Under the influence of DJ Premier and Kool G Rap, the early-nineties debuts of Notorious B.IG., the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Jay-Z, AZ, and the Mobb Deep duo, New York was at the absolute peak of its creative power, writing the rough trade from the absolute bottom of society.

Curtis “Interscope” Jackson drops not one but two of the disc’s best verses, which is perhaps as much a testament to Prodigy’s lack of interest in rhyming when he raps as it is to 50’s slept-on pen skills.
