Sculptor.Org - Mobiles and Kinetic Sculptures
Mobiles as an art form have degenerated into abstract trifles, perhaps because nobody has figured out how to make representational mobiles, or there have been no innovations since Calder decided he wanted to sculpt space rather than form.
In these sculptures the kinetic element mirrors the shape of the stationary part of the form and as it turns it appears it will collide with its immobile counterpart but passes by to turn gracefully in the wind.
In one sculpture (1997), mechanical arms whirl bright yellow scraps of wood in six seemingly incongruous orbits within a fl void, until the scraps are swung into the center, where they fit perfectly together to form a small chair, which after a split second explodes only to fall back together again.

Rolling Ball Scupture - Kinetic Art and Design
Kinetic art explores how things look when they move and refers mostly to sculptured works, made up of parts designed to be set in motion by an internal mechanism or an external stimulus, such as light or air.
Among the earliest attempts to incorporate movement in a plastic artwork was Moholy-Nagy's Space-Light Modulator, a sculpture producing moving shadows made at the Bauhaus between 1922 and 1930, certain Constructivists works, Marcel Duchamp's Rotary Glass Plate and Rotary Demisphere (Precision Optics), and Alexander Calder's motorized sculptures from 1930s.
Other kinetic-art gadgets and sculptures may use exotic techniques such as pyrotechnics and are limited only by their creators' imaginations.
