Topic: Mobile submarine simulator

Mobile submarine simulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The mobile submarine simulator (MOSS) is a sonar decoy used by submarines of the United States Navy.
It is a 21-inch torpedo, without an explosive warhead, but able to generate a strong sound signature recorded to be extremely similar to that of the launching submarine.
The MOSS first entered service in 1976 and has been deployed on all American ballistic missile submarines since the 1980s.

The Ohio class of fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), also known as "Trident" submarines, provides the sea-based leg of the triad of the United States strategic deterrent forces.
Beginning with the ninth Trident submarine, USS Tennessee (SSBN-734), all new ships are equipped with the Trident II D-5 missile system as they are built, and the earlier ships are being retrofitted to Trident II.
SSBNs: 24 tubes for Trident I and II, MK-48 torpedoes, mobile submarine simulator decoys, four torpedo tubes.

Mobile was founded in 1702 by Jean Baptiste le Mayne and named after the Mauvilla Indians who had a settlement on this site.
Mobile has been a much coveted port throughout its history because of its strategic location as a deep bay port protected by the barrier islands of Dauphin Island and Gulf Shores.
Mobile's history leads to its rich Spanish, French, African, and Creole heritage that make it the culturally diverse city it is today.

 BHARAT RAKSHAK MONITOR: Volume 3(4)
With SSBN it became clear that a crippled submarine must be able to launch her nuclear armed ballistic missile, and so the designers were told to investigate ways of sinking a submarine with a single shot or a total Mission Kill.
To start with the submarine ability to carry out evasive man oeuvres is sharply limited when compared to surface vessel; further and more fundamentally, water viscosity prevents the use of long-range decoys for immediate deployment.
The Heavy Weights among US submarine launched decoys is indisputably the MOSS(Mobile Submarine Simulator). This is a full size (254mm dia) torpedo, able to generate a strong underwater signature extremely similar to that of the submarine.

The third submarine was referred to by some as the "Fish Boat" of the "Fish Torpedo Boat", but would be officially named for her committed benefactor, H.L. Hunley.
The newly constructed H.L. Hunley slid down wooden ramps into Mobile Harbor and as the submarine plowed toward the target, a long rope with a powder-filled cylinder attached at its stern trailed in her wake.
Mobile, possibly due to her deep-south location, was not at great risk and had a relatively fortified port.

Simulations are invaluable in evaluating the filter performance, since the ensemble mean can be precisely calculated analytically in the simulation, and compared directly with the sample estimates.

According to former VADM Kirk H. Donald, Commander Naval Submarine Forces, submarines provided a significant portion of the credible combat force that mustered during Summer Pulse ‘04, and they demonstrated the Submarine Force’s ability to surge combat power across the globe quickly for operations in multiple theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition forces.
According to RADM Paul F. Sullivan, Commander Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet, submarines are key to implementing the FRP and remain essential to our ability to respond to contingencies and fight the Global War on Terrorism.
Pacific Fleet attack submarines are involved on a daily basis in operations that set the stage for any future conflict, and are likely to have a significant impact on the outcome of any contingencies based on that preparation,” said RADM Sullivan.

For a defence system, decoys and chaff for ICBMs would mainly be a problem in midcourse: during the boost phase they would be inside the rocket, because separate rockets for each of many decoys would not be practical, while at reentry light decoys and chaff considerably slow down and/or are destroyed in the atmosphere.

The committee further understands that the TB-23 array must be refurbished and upgraded periodically to maintain the reliability and effectiveness of this critical acoustic sensor.
Therefore, in order to ensure that the submarine force retains modern and reliable acoustic sensors until completely outfitted with the TB-29A array, the committee recommends $114.6 million for SSN acoustics, an increase of $8.0 million, to sustain the TB-23 array refurbishment and upgrade program.
