  Mobsters
Both Mobsters and The Don is Dead came out a year after their better-known counterparts, presumably hoping to capitalize on the then-current interest in wiseguys.
I don't know how that corresponds to reality, but the character in the movie was essentially likeable, a guy who relied on violence only as a last resort, in defense of himself and his friends.
means the movie is not good enough to win you over if you hate the genre, but is good enough to do so if you have an open mind about this type of film.

"Mobsters" is very much "Young Tommy Guns," with Christian Slater (who co-starred in the "Young Guns" sequel) as Lucky Luciano, Patrick Dempsey as Meyer Lansky, Richard Grieco as Bugsy Siegel and Costas Mandylor as Frank Costello, all real-life, big-time gangsters in the '20s and '30s.
Where you might think "Mobsters" owes something to the success of "GoodFellas" and the "Godfather" films, it really owes a lot more to the old Warner Bros. gangster pictures of the '30s, which were purely visceral action films.
"Mobsters" is rated R for considerable violence and gore, profanity, sex and nudity.

 The Baron of Deseret
It's easy to sympathize with their struggles...except that as long as a ticket to an LDS film (like "Mobsters and Mormons") costs exactly the same amount as a ticket to a "Lord of the Rings" or a "Star Wars" movie, you must be held to the same standards.
In the only role in the movie where the performance really matters, George (aka Carmine "The Beans" Pasquale) is played with attitude and panache by Mark DeCarlo in one of those over-the-top roles that actors love (one that's genuinely fun to perform...if not necessarily to watch).
If George's personality becomes wearing over the course of the movie (which it does) it's less because the performance is lacking, but rather because his character doesn't have any support, and he's forced to carry too many of the scenes on the shoulders of 'personality'.

The article told of a family who were not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who moved into a neighbor in a Salt Lake City suburb filled predominately with members of the LDS church.
John focused the movie from the non-Mormon’s perspective so that the story line and comedy would appeal to a wider and more diverse audience.
I was encouraged by those who were not LDS to use the title “Mobsters and Mormons.” The title alone spoke volumes to them about the possibilities of this film.

A man in a Winkies fast-food place thinks he might be dreaming everything, a torrid lesbian love affair may be imaginary, and a blue box and a nightclub called Silencio seem to hold the key to whatever is going on while old-time Hollywood hoofer Ann Miller points out a dog turd on the pavement.
In short, it might be a movie whose own mystery and horror will help people forget the mystery and horror outside, or it might piss people off as tasteless and insensitive and perhaps even unpatriotic given the present circumstances.

The movie’s setting is South Boston on St. Patrick’s Day, which is ironic because Boston is home to thousands of people from an Irish decent with Catholicism as their main religion.
The movie itself asks a morale question that is brought up everyday in society, who decides who punishes evil and to what extent.
It is a real surprise for such a small budget movie but with a witty and intelligent script and perfectly done performances, it is kind of hard to believe that so many people overlooked this movie.

It's a fitting end-scene to an unusual LDS movie, a film that puts a rough-edged mobster and his dysfunctional family squarely in the heart of Mormondom and thus right into Utah Valley.
Moyer said even though the lead character is a mobster trying to shed his shady lifestyle, he has written a treatment that doesn't call for crudity or profanity.
The movie, produced for just under $500,000, is scheduled for release in the late fall of 2005 or early in 2006.
