 MOBY GRAPE
At their best, the Grape were as good as the best of them, and unlike so many, they are still an entity that matters.
On Moby Grape, the contours of the San Francisco sound are present in the way the band blends together; individual, personal style shining from every corner of the music.
Moby Grape may be the most joyous of sixties’ San Francisco rock album classics.

 VH1.com : Moby Grape : Biography
Moby Grape remains their signature statement, though the folk-rock and country-rock worked better than the boogies; "Omaha," "Sittin' by the Window," "Changes," and "Lazy Me" are some of their best songs.
Moby Grape's follow-up, the double-LP Wow, was one of the most disappointing records of the '60s, in light of the high expectations fostered by the debut.
Their problems were exacerbated by Matthew Katz, who owns the Moby Grape name, and has sometimes prevented the original members from using the name when they worked together.

Everyone agreed that Moby Grape was an astounding band, but confused the Airplane was that they were managed by one Matthew Katz.
The Grape's saga is one of squandered potential, absurdly misguided decisions, bad-luck, blunders and excruciating heartbreak, all set to the tune of some of the greatest rock and roll ever to emerge from San Francisco.
There would be other Moby Grape recordings and reunions, both under that name and others–the Legendary Grape, the Melvilles–concocted in an effort to circumvent Katz's claims on the group, but for the most part, despite the occasional resurfacing, Moby Grape was sunk almost from the start.

We left Peter Lewis and Moby Grape last installment, scratching their collective heads in 1967 after signing a rider to their management contract with Matthew Katz (pronounced "Kates," by the way, so you won't be confused when the butler announces him in the morning room some day).
Somebody once said, "At its best Moby Grape was more like a gang fight than a rock band." And it had that energy in it.
We made Moby Grape '69, in an attempt to rebound from the Wow album, which was over-produced.

And like those groups, Moby Grape was to go within just a few months from initial rehearsals to full-blown recording sessions.
The Grape cut a third album without him, and later a bizarre country-western fourth album with only three of the original band members, but the spark - and opportunity to cash in on the nation's Summer of Love cultural detour - was gone forever.
The original LP came with a bonus disk called Grape Jam, which as you might expect is a bunch of studio jams a la disk 3 of All Things Must Pass.

Moby Grape : Wow - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Although a variety of primarily promotional-driven missteps almost beached Moby Grape, the Bay Area-based quintet of Peter Lewis (guitar), Bob Mosley (bass), Jerry Miller (guitar), Skippy Spence (guitar), and Don Stevenson (drums) were able to produce an undeniably strong debut outing during 1967's Summer of Love.
Sadly, Moby Grape's run ended prior to the completion of Wow when Lewis quit and then Spence rapidly declined into substance-informed insanity.
While other variations of Moby Grape resurfaced throughout the 1970s and '80s -- including a reunion under the moniker of The Melvelle's -- none captured the energy or passion of their first two albums.
