The Mockingboard was a sound card for the Apple II family of microcomputers.
The standard Apple II machines never had particularly good sound, especially when compared to competitors like the SID chip-enabled Commodore_64.
The Mockingboard was available in various models for either the slot based Apple II / Apple II Plus / Apple IIe systems or in one special model for the Apple IIc.

MockingBoard C is simply a MB-A that has been upgraded by plugging in one speech chip.
The Apple II speaker is in the Collector circuit of the sound output transistor-- one end of the spkr goes to a resistor and capacitor connected to the output transistor Collector and the other goes to +5V (not ground).

These samples (except Ultima III which does use a mockingboard A) are actually played on a phasor sound board, an enhanced mockingboard compatible card made by Applied Engineering.
Ultima V supported the phasor (or 2 mockingboards) for additional voices, while I believe the older Ultimas did not support more than 6 voices by default.

You need to go to the GS Control Panel and change the Slots setting for the Slot your MB card is in to "Your Card".
U4MOCKV2.SHK is a collection of programs which will let you play Ultima IV on your GS with MockingBoard sound.
Both of these wares take care of activating the MockingBoard Slot without changing Control Panel settings.

Next prompt is "First Mockingboard: Which kind?" with three options; "1- Sound One", "2- Sound-Speech", and "3 - Mockingboard A or C"; press "3" to select "3 - Mockingboard A or C".
