CSICOP / CMI / Reviews / Haunting Mockumentary Reaches New Lows
Dissatisfied with Roll's counsel, the family consulted psychic Amy Allen, who detected several spirits, one of them evil, another a "protector." Finally, after almost a decade of manifestations, the Bible-believing Wyricks thought to involve their church, undergoing a bargain basement exorcism while New Dominion's cameras rolled.
With this departure from established mockumentary technique, viewers lose their last platform, however rickety, from which to tease perhaps more-reliable participants' claims from the less plausible re-enactments.
Mockumentary means a program shot in a faux documentary style which uses latter-day re-enactments to supply narrative material for which actual historic footage is unavailable or would be impossible to obtain.

  What is a Mockumentary?
A mockumentary is a "mock documentary", a parody of the often earnest nature of the documentary film genre.
Although the term mockumentary didn't enter pop culture until the release of Rob Reiner's groundbreaking comedy This is Spinal Tap, many filmmakers over the years have created fictionalized documentaries and false newsreel footage for comedic effect.
Interviews in a mockumentary are deliberately tiresome, with the interviewer's reaction shots obviously edited at a later date.

Mockumentary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mockumentary, a portmanteau of mock documentary (also fictional documentary or false documentary), is a film and TV genre, or a single work of the genre.
Mockumentaries are often presented as historical documentaries with b roll and talking heads discussing past events or as cinéma vérité pieces following people as they go through various events.
Mockumentaries are often partly or wholly improvised, as an unscripted style of acting helps to maintain the pretense of reality.

 WowEssays.com - Mockumentary
Mockumentary: Questioning Reality and the Tenets of Documentary Film Itself A mock documentary is successful when it is able to combine both the appearance of historically accurate elements and present believable situations through a false lens, leading the audience to question the reality of what they are seeing.
The false images in the early films were used to provide authenticity; fake scenes were used to include the action and events that the camera was unable to capture to add to the credibility of their footage.
Another way the director of a mockumentary is able to add to the convincing appearance of the film is by shying away from the recognizable faces of Hollywood.

Film review: The Mockumentary, by Mervin Manufacturing   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Before the reels started rolling, Seattle snowboard retailer extraordinaire John Logic and his Snowboard Connection crew tossed a bunch of swag to the eager crowd, packed like sardines into the trendy club, Aro Space and pro riders Dave Lee and Jamie Lynn raffled off their signature boards (oddly DJ Sureshot won one — very suspect).
And by the time Mockumentary hit the screen, the mostly inebriated crowd was already fully psyched by the prelude, Sessions team flick Viva Sessions.
Mockumentary showcases the talents of Mervin Manufacturing's Gnu and Lib Tech team riders - and starts with a bang, the first 10 minutes setting the tone with lots of freeriding, some freestyle and nothing stupid.

Dave Kopel on Michael Moore on National Review Online
Moore thus confirms the absurdity of the blame-America-first position popular among the Hollywood Left, by showing that such views require the ignoring of obvious facts — such as the difference between financial aid to a dictatorship and humanitarian aid to refugees, or between fighting enemy pilots and perpetrating war crimes against civilians.
In keeping with the mockumentary format, Moore tells the audience that bowling was "apparently the last thing they did before the massacre." Even if the killers hadn't skipped class, this statement would be untrue.
The fact is that a mockumentary larded with untruths and brazen self-contradiction is gobbling up documentary prizes: a special award at the Cannes Film Festival, the National Board of Review's "Best Documentary," the International Documentary Association's choice for best documentary ever, and the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

In the mockumentary, the new electronic media basically blow away the old by paying attention to what people want, most of which would be called soft news or non-news today.

As might be expected, along the corridors of academic film studies, the meta-textual mix and match that is the stock and trade of the mockumentary has been catnip for smitten exegesis—usually bereft of the wit of the text on the dissection table.
In fact, Guest rejects the term “mockumentary” as too glib and condescending, but a ruse by any other name is still a ruse.
Which is why it is always advisable, whether in mock docs or doc docs, to keep a sharp eye and ear out for the selective memory of the audiovisual filter.

Salon Column | The mockumentary cometh
And in the 20th century, every time someone comes out with a new gospel it only takes the smart alecks of the world about five minutes to start parodying it, which is to say ripping it down.

If mockumentaries are about cutting egos down, a documentary like "Gimme Shelter" is meant to showcase them.

As a wedding mockumentary, 'Confetti' lands harmlessly - The Boston Globe
Weddings can be a peculiar form of self-inflicted torture: They're carnivals staged for the pleasure of everyone except the couple in the center ring.
They have their practical applications -- if you can survive the stress of getting married, you can probably survive the marriage itself -- but as spectacle, they're best approached from the outside.
``Confetti," a good-natured but terminally mild British mockumentary from writer-director Debbie Isitt, believes that if one nuptial disaster is funny, three are funnier, and so it stages a ``Most Original Wedding of the Year" contest between a trio of happy, nervous couples.

But in typical Jeturian fashion, he wanted a comedy that combined humor with wit—in short he wanted to make a film that would not insult the intelligence of moviegoers.
The “mockumentary” format lent itself well to the kind of movie he wanted to make, and to the subject matter itself.

CSULB Online 49er: v10n113: ‘Wind’ powers mockumentary advancements
In terms of style and plot, “A Mighty Wind” appears as a light-hearted mockumentary compared to the sometimes dark, but cheesy “This is Spinal Tap.” The film is filled with funny moments and things a viewer would never expect people to say or do, if it was an actual documentary.
The idea of the mockumentary has certainly advanced into more than just the comedy category, with the horror hit “The Blair Witch Project.” The first-person camera movements seen in “A Mighty Wind,” and just about every other mockumentary satirizes the use of in your face camera angles.
One thing that will never go away from mockumentaries is the laughter and intimate portrayal of interesting human beings.
