MOCOA, Colombia, Dec 2 (IPS) - Aleida Cuarán, 36, was sentenced to eight years in a Colombian prison on Jan. 24, 2001.
Cuarán is from Mocoa, the capital of the southern Colombian department (province) of Putumayo, an oil-rich zone that is one of the poorest parts of the country, and one of the hardest-hit by the armed conflict and drug trafficking.
In Mocoa, 150 children of 80 female prisoners are, like her daughters, going from home to home, trading work for a roof over their heads, meals, and in some cases, the possibility of attending school.

When a child said Cuaran was their teacher, an agent answered: “No. All of them are guerrillas.” Artemio Pantoja, a plumber who was at the school building, and whose daughter was the secretary of the police headquarters in Mocoa, insisted they respect his life since his daughter worked at the station.
This situation resulted in displaced people, who carried with them fear, uncertainty, distrust, grief, and resentment because all their rights as citizens were violated and the Colombian government seems indifferent to their problems.

The arrests came as part of a joint operation launched September 20 by the prosecutor’s office, police and army.
After learning his name was on a list of suspects, Mutumbajoy turned himself in to the local prosecutor’s office in Mocoa on September 22.

The incident took place at kilometre 14, on the road between Mocoa and Pasto, in Putumayo department, southern Colombia, near the border with Ecuador.
According to a local army commander, Colonel William Quintero, the attack was carried out by the FARC's 32nd Front.
Quintero said that any new stations built in the area should be constructed near Mocoa's urban centre, where there is a permanent security force presence.
