The ‘mod special’; trailed on the cover devoted four pages to the lives of the originals modernists, but tellingly two further pages were given over to the new wave of mods, featuring bands like the Purple Hearts and The Chords.
It would be Secret Affair who dragged the ‘Mods Mayday’ album into the charts for a one-week stay at Number 75 later in the year, but by this time they were already a Top 20 singles act and had long since taken their vision around the country with the March Of The Mods package tour.
But just as the mod revival was at it peak, with all the main players signed to major deals and queuing up to follow Secret Affair and the Merton Parkas into the charts, suddenly the fans were given another, less challenging option.

Mod (or, to use its full name, Modernism or sometimes Modism) was a lifestyle based around fashion and music that developed in London, England in the late 1950s and reached its peak in the early to mid 1960s.
Mods were obsessed with clothes and music, including Black American RandB and Soul, Jamaican Ska, and Bluebeat and a select few British groups such as The Beatles, the Small Faces, the Kinks, The Spencer Davis Group and The Who.
Mods made up (and continue to make up) a large proportion of the Northern soul movement, a subculture based on obscure American soul records from the 60's and 70's.

The Mod Revival, sometimes known as Punk Mod, is a name given to a genre of rock music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, mainly centred in Southern England.
Although not strictly a Mod revival band, The Vapors, were often seen as allied with it, and were championed by Bruce Foxton of the Jam.
Various Mod Revival members such as Paul Weller were to form The Style Council, a mid-1980s Soul influenced band, and Weller would later be nicknamed "The Modfather" for his idolisation by the Britpop movement.

The album was of course, All Mod Cons, which was smothered in the iconography of the 60's cult which had so impacted on the young Paul Weller three years earlier.
By coincidence, probably the most influential Mod band from the original 60's scene were in the process of making a film about the original teenage experience - based in their West London haunt of Shepherds Bush - through the eyes of a Mod.
News filters out, nostalgic epitaphs to Mod are published and by the time the film is launched a year later, that army of Jam fans grows into what will soon be labelled the Mod Revival.

Actually loved the photo's of the average mod, parka and all...'cos that's what most Mods were, particularly in the early days and to pretend everyone was into jazz, obscure R'n'B, coffee shops and hand made shoes wouldn't be accurate.

Along with the fishtail parka, and the monkey jacket, one of the true revival mod jackets..
Along with The Chords, The Lambrettas, Purple Hearts, Squire, Merton Parkas and countless others, were probably the best of the Mod Revival bands.

Roots of Mod, rumored to be the first use of feedback guitar, the simple staccato notes, the plugging bassline, and the power chord in slow motion in 1958 paved the way for surf guitar and Townshendian dynamics of noise.
First of all this is the mod band of all time, although the Who got to be larger as things progressed, nothing beats a Marriott/Lane composition on the modometer.
Also running around the Mod circle is the last track "Champagne Supernova" with Paul Weller joining a snowbound electric guitar barrage reminiscent of the Small Faces.

IN CASE you hadn't noticed, there's a Mod revival going on It's happening mainly in London and the South East, although there are small pockets of Mod activity around the rest of the country too.
The new Mods copy the style of the originals, and many of them are former punks looking for something new, They were out in force during The Jam's two-night stint at the London Rainbow.
Supporting The Jam were The Chords, a Mod band from South London who have just signed up to make their first record for Jimmy Pursey's production company (it was Jimmy, of course, who helped the Angelic Upstarts into the charts).
