Tracker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tracker is the generic term for a class of software music sequencers which, in their purest form, allow the user to arrange sound samples stepwise on a timeline across several monophonic channels.
Curiously, most early tracker musicians appeared to be from the UK and the Nordic nations, probably because the tracker was heavily related to the demoscene, which grew rapidly in Scandinavian countries.
Tracker music was a fantastic training ground for a generation of electronic dance musicians, many of whom saved up for an Akai sampler, a multi-effects unit, a mixer and a microphone, thence to storm the charts.

The first is the original trackers; I consider these the true authorities because they were around earlier, they created their own formats, and they mostly play the music the same on every computer (exception: IT's support for MIDI output).
Impulse Tracker uses a standard low- pass resonant filter algorithm with a slight modification to increase the resonance (the poles are closer to the unit circle).
ModPlug Tracker is now open source, but I suspect fixing 3, 2 and 1 would be deemed detrimental to too many people's music by now.

A tracker's interface is primarily numeric; notes are entered via the keyboard, whilst length, parameters, effects and so forth are entered in hexadecimal.
The machines on which tracker software ran were not expensive, particularly in the UK, where the Amiga and Atari ST were the default home computer choice during the six or so years spanning the dawn of the 1990s.
Tracker is also the name of a television series starring Adrian Paul and Geraint Wyn Davies.

The current version of ModPlug Tracker (1.16.0203) has a bug in the Export as Midi function relating to the mapping of percussion sounds.
ModPlug Tracker supports a number of "effects" to do things such as changing the volume of a note, the tempo of the song, etc. Unfortunately, very few of these actually work when exporting the song via MIDI.

Trackers, which are the programs used to compose MODS, come in many shapes and sizes.
ModPlug Tracker is one of the few trackers that doesn't use its own special module format, preferring instead to allow you to create Impulse Tracker, FastTracker II, and Scream Tracker modules.
Easiest to learn by far is Scream Tracker, very simple even for beginners but not as full featured as some of the other trackers.

A lot of "professional" techno/mashup writers utilize trackers, since the principle is exactly the same: use a bunch of audio samples and loop them.
Its Matilde Tracker generator functions identically to an old-style tracker with all the effects you're used to, but then you can slap all kinds of delays, distortion, vocoders or what-have-you into the signal chain.

ModPlug's other advantage is that if you're REALLY not comfortable with the tracker interface, you can sequence with something like Anvil and import the MIDI to ModPlug before messing with the tracking.
Trackers are pretty much outdated technology (unless you're doing system-specific songs, for systems Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance) and sequencers such as Reason, Sonar, Logic, and Cubase are generally superior in every respect.
The reason a lot of people still use trackers is only because they are used to it, and find the note input faster after years of practice; however, the piano roll is generally accepted to be more flexible and intuitive.

And to 'track' a mod means the same as 'composing' a mod, thus does 'tracking' stay similar to 'composing' and 'tracker' to 'composer'.
P.S. a little tip for the newbie trackers: If you are going to rip samples nobody's stopping you, but if the artist's name is clearly in the MOD, rename the sample in your mod with their name in it so listeners know where the sample came from.
