 Trouble erupts in Modasa over remarks on Prophet by Falwell- The Times of India   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Superintendent of police Nitiraj Solanki told TNN that trouble broke out after the hand-outs declaring the bandh were distributed in Modasa on Saturday.
A complaint was registered by the local police inspector stating that some 60 unidentified people from both communities clashed near the bus stand area in Modasa, leading to the tension.
Meanwhile, several Muslim leaders have decided not to extend support to the state-wide bandh called by a section of the Muslim community on Monday in connection with the remarks made on their prophet.

The society was started in a 8 ft by 8ft wooden cubicle by pioneers such as Ibrahim Sabaliya, Yousuf Suthar and Ibrahim Anarwala who were enthused by the nationalisation of banks by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi and their expanded role in public financing.
Says Mujeebur Rahman Bhayla, a medium scale truck operator: “Though Modasa has few crorepatis, the organisation of the business by the MRTC enabled a large number of Ghanchi entrepreneurs to achieve a decent standard of living in a short time.” In fact, no one in the town owns more than eight trucks.

 The Hindu : Violence persists in Gujarat
At least four persons were killed in police firing and stabbing in the communally-sensitive Broach and Modasa towns today as violence continued to rock several parts of Gujarat.
An indefinite curfew has been clamped on both Broach and Modasa following the violence which also forced the authorities to postpone the on-going secondary and higher secondary examinations in these towns in addition to Ahmedabad and Baroda where they were postponed earlier in view of the disturbed conditions.
Two persons were stabbed to death in broad daylight this afternoon in Modasa in north Gujarat, which has a history of communal disturbances at the slightest provocation, but had so far remained by and large peaceful.

Talking to reporters after flagging off new broad gauge railway line between Modasa and Kapavganj, he said, "After stalemate for sometime since the election, it was proper that a popular government take over the charge in the crucial border state."
For sometime Governor's rule had to be placed as political parties in the hung Assembly could not give a government, he said and added that as per indications made on October 26, a government would soon be sworn-in in Srinagar.

When the Godhra riot victim moves into a one-room house after nearly three years of living in a tent outside this town, it will be not to his village in Sabarkantha but to a colony in Millatnagar, 20 km away, where hundreds of riot victims now live.
The BJP made it a point during the polls to go through the voters' list, removing names registered both in Modasa and the original villages.

But when the railway authorities, after a prolonged delay of 22 years, directed the deputy collector of Modasa in 1998 to acquire and mark-out land for laying tracks to Titoi (as per the 1976 plan), it was found that extension of tracks was not possible.
With help from the Town Planning Department and Modasa authorities, the proposed railway alignment area, as per the plan of 1976, along with its surroundings, had been developed into thickly populated residential areas.
Interestingly, last month in a meeting that the railway authorities had with the state parliamentarians on various gauge conversion proposals and other rail-related issues, the proposal for the 14-kilometre extension on the Nadiad-Kapadwanj-Modasa route never came up for discussion.

Almost 55 years after the bloody partition of the subcontinent into Muslim-majority Pakistan and Hindu-dominated India, hatred is creating deep rifts between Hindus and Muslims in Gujarat where some 950 people have been killed since the country’s worst religious violence in a decade erupted in late February.
