Slashdot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since trolling is prevalent, a moderation system was implemented, whereby every comment posted (including those posted anonymously) can be "moderated" up or down by chosen moderators, changing the post's score likewise.
Moderation points added to a comment are also added to a user's karma score.
Moderator access for non-editors is time limited (to a few days) and the number of 'mod points' one gets is limited (to a max of 5 points at the time of this writing).

 Pitfalls of Newsgroup Moderation
Moderation is rather far from a cure-all.) This is an attempt to get you thinking about some issues that you may not be aware of or may be tempted to discount.
The first section is aimed at proponents of moderated groups, the second at prospective (or current) moderators, and the third at readers of and posters to moderated groups.
Moderated groups require some group of people to regularly invest their time in the newsgroup, day in and day out, for as long as the newsgroup exists.

Slash Moderation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The moderation system is designed to sort the gems and the crap from the steady stream of information that flows through the pipe.
The system worked pretty well, but as Slashdot continued to grow, it was obvious that these 25 people wouldn't be enough to keep up with the thousands of posts we were getting each day.
This prevents people from creating new accounts to simply get moderator access, but more importantly, means that newbies will have to be part of the community for a few weeks before they gain access to the controls to a system they don't understand.

Slashdot FAQ - Comments and Moderation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Since this system is essentially an experiment in trying to solve the problems inherent in mass communication, one would expect its success to be variable, and indeed, this is the case.
Moderators' primary complaint is that they are often crippled by the tiny amount of points they have, and the overwhelming amount of comments that need moderation.
However, to the extent that there may be problems with unfair moderation, we have come up with a system of meta-moderation (moderating the moderation) to address this.

Social experiment on Slashdot moderation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The comment will probably be moderated down now that the author of the prank has posted a comment explaining what he did (note: I am not related to this guy in any way), but that was an interesting social experiment.
All moderators have equal powers and the system is supposed to work as a kind of democracy.
The system would have to look for users that usually have opinions there are few people that disagree with, and, if a challenge against correctness is allowed, seldom has their positive knowledge-based evaluation go against correctness.

Point/Karma system in Drupal | drupal.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
I was thinking maybe node moderation could be tweaked a bit to have votes equal points, but there seems to be no connection between votes and the author, only the node.
The system would include several different rating schemes hard-coded in--there's the "time-weighted average" used in the mojo system (op cit), a simple cumulative score, an average score, total votes cast (for content), total contributions (for users), etc. It might be possible to let admins type in mathematical expressions for custom schemes--this raises obvious problems though.
The point system needs to be adjustable to fit the type of community and not stifle input while keeping noise from overcoming the signal.

It's still a bit of an enigma, even for me. I will try to explain some of the history of the system, as well as how it works (or doesn't work) from both the perspective of the user, and the moderator.
This is to prevent abuses, and while it is one of the more controversial aspects of the system, we.re sticking to it.

A moderation request will be entered into the database, and if you click on the Moderate button at the top of the page you will be taken to the moderation page, where you can view/vote on moderations.
Some moderations, such as the add album moderation, will add data into the database at the time the moderation is entered into the system.
Automoderators are moderators who have made a large number of contributions to MusicBrainz, and some basic moderations made by automoderators are not required to be voted on by other moderators.

Post Moderation - vBulletin Community Forum
There is a system in vbulletin, that allows you to moderate posts before they appear on the board.
The current system is called SMT (super Moderator Tool) a set of Perl scripts that when accessed show all the posts in the forums that have been posted since the last time the posts were checked.
The moderator(s) then moderate every post - either allowing the post to remain as is or remove it.

Acceptable messages are forwarded immediately by the system to the user's mailing list for distribution, while any questionable messages are forwarded to the user (the list owner).
The goal is to create an artificially intelligent moderator that can make the right decision in almost all cases, while letting you have the final say about rejecting messages.
The messages listed here are ones that have already been moderated and either sent back to your list service for distribution, or rejected and sent to you for a second opinion.

These moderations represent approximately 8% of all moderation, and according to Meta Moderation, the fairness of these comments is statistically indistinguishable from the moderation of non admin users (92-93% of moderations are ruled 'Fair').
You can argue that this is somehow inherently unfair, but one of the goals of Slashdot is to produce readable content for a variety of readers with a variety of reading habits, and this process improves discussions for the vast majority of Slashdot Readers, so it will stay this way.

The result is a filtering system that encourages the very behavior it was designed to prevent.
Still, it's important to remember this essential truth: Any complicated moderation system that makes its algorithms public is eventually going to fall victim to gaming.
