  Moderator of the General Assembly - Definition, explanation
Meetings of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, held in May each year, are chaired by the Moderator.
It should be noted that the Moderator is not the head of the Church, nor the leader of the Church of Scotland, or its spokesperson.
After the Assembly, the Moderator spends much of the rest of his or her time in office travelling as a Church representative in Scotland, other parts of the UK, Ireland and overseas in an ambassadorial capacity.

When the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland united to form the Kingdom of Great Britain under the Act of Union 1707, the offices of the Chancellor of England and the Lord Chancellor of Scotland were combined, to form a single Lord Chancellor was appointed for the new state.
The Lord Chancellor does not maintain custody of the Great Seal of Scotland (which is kept by the First Minister of Scotland) or of the Great Seal of Northern Ireland (which is kept by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland).
In Scotland, he precedes all non-royal individuals except the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

In 1832 Chalmers became Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland
His dislike of patronage led in the 1840s to a crisis in the Church of Scotland about the extent of patronage and influence of wealthy parishioners in the church.
The ministers who had walked out were left without a church or a manse but within two years 500 churches had been built as well as schools, since supportive schoolmasters (appointed by the local church) had been driven out as well.

Born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, the Rev Sheilagh M. Kesting (aged 53) secretary of the Church of Scotland Committee on Ecumenical Relations, was educated at the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway.
From an early age, Ms Kesting was interested in the different churches and during her university years, increased her ecumenical awareness and chose to worship in congregations ranging from conservative evangelical to high Episcopalian.
Ms Kesting was secretary to the ecumenical conversations, SCIFU (Scottish Churches Initiative for Union), the talks with the United Free Church which led to the recent signing of a Covenant, continuing talks with the Free Church and joint secretary of the Joint Commission on Doctrine (Church of Scotland/Roman Catholic).

The Rt Rev Alan McDonald, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, will travel to London on December 1 to present a petition of over 20,000 signatures to the Ministry of Defence.
Together with the Most Rev Idris Jones of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Richard McCready of the Scottish Catholic Church, the Moderator will present the petition which calls for the government not to invest in a replacement for the Trident nuclear missile, and to begin the process of decommissioning these weapons.
The Moderator is a fierce opponent of nuclear weapons and this petition follows in the footsteps of The Long Walk For Peace in September when religious leaders, campaigners and trade union activists joined him on an epic 85 mile cross country walk from Faslane to the Scottish Parliament to highlight the nuclear weapons issue.

Yesterday, soon after my arrival in Scotland, I had the happiness of being greeted by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Professor John McIntyre.
It was in that same spirit of prayerful ecumenical endeavour that I also had the great pleasure last Saturday of meeting representatives of the Church of Scotland and the Episcopal Church in Scotland, together with other British church leaders.

RICHMOND, June 30 - The General Assembly approved the appointments of two seminary presidents Wednesday: Iain R. Torrance of Princeton Theological Seminary, and Dean K. Thompson of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
In remarks to the Assembly, Torrance told a story about a blind man taught by missionaries to read the Bible in Braille, whose son later went on to an important ministry fighting AIDS.
Torrance comes to Princeton from Scotland, where he recently served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, dean of the faculty of arts and divinity at the University of Aberdeen and master of Christ's College, Aberdeen, where he also taught patristics and Christian ethics.
