Modern Jazz Quartet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Modern Jazz Quartet was established in 1952 by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano, musical director), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums).
Among its original compositions are "Django" by Lewis (a tribute to the Belgian jazz guitar player Django Reinhardt) and "Bags' Groove" by Jackson (named after his nickname).
Jackson left the group in 1974 because he was tired of touring, and the group soon disbanded.

 Encyclopedia: Modern Jazz Quartet
Its musicians were "trying to raise the quality of jazz from the level of utilitarian dance music to that of a chamber art form...[and] the status of the jazz performer from entertainer to artist." 1 Unlike the simplistic swing music, bebop was fast and complex, requiring technical proficiency.
Jazz, then, has not only lived a curious existence isolated from the main body of music, but has lived that existence for no more than sixty or seventy years, which explains the feverish haste which it has evolved from era to era.
But if no new styles seem imminent, the jazz follower of the 19605 can at least console himself with two thoughts; first, that jazz has always proved in the past to be an utterly unpredictable form, and second, that masters of all styles coexist today in an atmosphere of healthy exchange.

 The Modern Jazz Quartet
The Modern Jazz Quartet were incredibly important in the development of jazz in the 1950s, and although they officially disbanded in 1974, they’ve reformed for both concerts and recordings several times since then, making them now an “evergreen” jazz band.
The Modern Jazz Quartet was originally formed as the Milt Jackson Quartet (which, conveniently, had the same initials, MJQ) and consisted of Jackson on vibraphone, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums.
Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson (PRLP-160), released in 1953, which is now valued at from $60 to $150, depending on condition.

JAZCLASS : About JOHN LEWIS (p.1) - Jazz pianist, composer, Modern Jazz Quartet band leader
Initially known as the Milt Jackson Quartet, John Lewis soon took over as musical director of the group and the name was changed to the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ).
In Jazz his compositions are unique, as they commonly combine the element of Classical form with the Traditional Jazz element (largely lost in modern Jazz) of collective improvisation.
MJQ refers to the Modern Jazz Quartet : John Lewis piano - Milt Jackson vibraharp - Percy Heath bass - Kennie Clarke, and after 1955, Connie Kay on drums.

The MJQ has long displayed John Lewis' musical vision, making jazz seem respectable by occasionally interacting with classical ensembles and playing concerts at prestigious venues, but always leaving plenty of space for bluesy and swinging improvising.
Although the musicians all had opportunities to pursue individual projects, in 1974 Milt Jackson, tired of the constant touring and the limitations set on his improvising and he quit the group, causing the MJQ to have a final tour and break up.
In 1981 Jackson relented and the Modern Jazz Quartet (which has recorded further albums for Pablo and Atlantic) became active again although on a more part-time basis.

Ironically, The Modern Jazz Quartet's European Concert album finally is released on CD for the first time just before the passing of the third member of the legendary group, reducing the survivors to one: Percy Heath, who also is a member of one of the leading family triumvirates in jazz.
It was already acknowledged as a unique voice in jazz and one that brought in new listeners as they paid attention to the group's music, the combination of jazz and blues with a classical sensibility gaining ever more respect wherever they played.
Perhaps that was because of the integrity of the quartet, which played the music it believed in and didn't condescend to the listeners or expect them to hear simplification of the music.

It is not "Cool Jazz" -- that's the sort of music that gives jazz a bad name and causes fools to forget about the REAL intellectuals of jazz -- and no one could do meditative jazz like MJQ.
I wouldn't say that this is only for MJQ collectors; but be aware that, for me at least, it sounds a little flat, and the sound one critic likened to Steuben glass is only a hint on this CD.
When it first appeared it was, like that great record, a huge hit on the jazz scene and beyond, and the fact that it appealed to one's parents is in no sense a reason for thinking it anything less than inspiring.

Lewis' support of the ragtag Texas native was somewhat unique in jazz circles at the time and even surprising, especially considering the gulf between the classical jazz formality of his group the Modern Jazz Quartet and Coleman's radical notions of free improvisation.
The quartet doesn't take Coleman's free form harmolodic theory to heart with a round of quixotic solos, but the group does spotlight the often overlooked strength of his compositional ideas.
And while the MJQ further plies its knack for involved pieces on Lewis originals like "Fugato" and "Trieste," the group also balances out the set with looser material more in tune with Jackson's blues and swing sensibilities.
