Library - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Libraries were filled with parchment scrolls as at Pergamum and on papyrus scrolls as at Alexandria: export of prepared writing materials was a staple of commerce.
Libraries have materials arranged in a specified order according to a library classification system, so that items may be located quickly and collections may be browsed efficiently.
Basic tasks in library management include the planning of acquisitions (which materials the library should acquire, by purchase or otherwise), library classification of acquired materials, preservation of materials (especially rare and fragile archival materials such as manuscripts), the deaccessioning of materials, patron borrowing of materials, and developing and administering library computer systems.

Modern Library - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Modern Library, a current division of Random House publishers, was founded in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright.
In 1950 it began publishing the Modern Library College Editions, a forerunner of their current series of paperback classics.
The Promethean bearer of enlightenment (known informally around the old Modern Library offices as the "dame running away from Bennett Cerf") was redesigned several times over the years, most notably by Rockwell Kent.

IOBA Standard - Collecting the Modern Library: A Gentle Introduction by Scot Kamins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One of the reasons the Modern Library is so much fun to collect is the variety of foci you can have -- a direct result of the series' longevity and the willingness of its management to experiment with the format.
Enough information exists in the few available reference sources to identify almost all Modern Library first editions along with the characteristics of their appropriately matching dust jackets, but these copies are generally more expensive and less common (and therefore more difficult to come by) than non-first printings.
He is the Webmaster of Collecting the Modern Library at www.dogeared.com, and is the founder of the popular rec.collecting.books newsgroup.

Modern Library Dust Jackets and Bindings: 1917-1939
In 1925 the Modern Library was sold to Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, and the series eventually became the cornerstone of Random House publishers.
The Modern Library, and other similar series, were inexpensive books for the common man or woman, and were read and recycled (as used books) to the extent that few pre-WW2 copies survive with fine or even very good dust jackets.
Modern Library catalogs were typically printed in the back of the book if there were enough left over pages in the last signature.

Modern Library 100 Best Novels   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Modern Library polled their editorial board in the Spring of 1998 to find out what were the 100 Best Novels written in English in this Century.
The main complaints about the Modern Library list boil down to these: 1) Not enough novels by women (are we ever going to stop hearing this?); and 2) Not enough novels from Anglophone countries that are not the U.S. and England.
Although some of their choices are inspired (like Beerbohm's "Zuleika Dobson"), the Modern Library list is very light on novels by Anglophone countries that are not America or England.

Modern Library [and Everyman's Library] Simulacra?
The Companion Books series was a clear attempt to mimic the Modern Library in look (bars on the dust jacket spine, endpapers, and stampings on the book binding) and feel (with a floppy, fake leather binding material), but not in content (more classics than the Modern Library).
Sometime before 1934 the jackets for the New Adelphi Library were redesigned and bear a striking resemblance to Modern Library typographical dust jackets (first used in 1928).
While the commonalities in DJ design between the Modern Library and New Adelphi Library are surprising, there are other oddities: Certain titles in the New Adelphi Library were apparently printed and bound by Dent, the publisher of Everyman's Library, and share characteristics with that series.
