Is modern life rubbish? - Giddens on Modernity - Liam Dennis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Modernity, as employed by Giddens, serves merely as a contrast to the traditional structure of society and its characteristics of collectivity and kinship.
Modernity, it is stated, elicits a corresponding resignation of power and control of individualism over to external agencies - resultant from the "sheer scale of societies" (Cassell, 1993, pg 204) and untenable or unfathomable diversity of external influences.
With modernity, the dichotomy between the two poles is accentuated, and illustrated by the "standardising effects of commodity capitalism" (pg 196).

Modern Life Is Rubbish by Blur CD
MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH is one of those records that improves with each listen, with the quiet brilliance of story-songs like "Colin Zeal," "Chemical World," and "Pop Scene" (a smart addition to the US release).
Modern Life is Rubbish showed the determination of a group of so-called underdogs desperate to succeed.
Modern life may be a bit ropey but stick this on and you'll soon forget your worries.

This is the modern sound of Britpop: Four lads in London break out of a record company-created stereotype (their name was given to them by A&R men) and surprise the masses with a mature and complex second album.
With Modern Life Is Rubbish, Blur has dropped the shoegazer mentality of Leisure in favor of a neo-mod attitude, crafting precise pop songs more intent on sounding dynamic and intricate than just good.

Modern farms are 'like Auschwitz', modern food is 'toxic', modern medicine is 'unsafe', etc. In fact, attach it to pretty much anything you (don't) like, from scientific research to supermarkets, and the prefix 'modern' has become a boo-word, to be pronounced with a sneer.
It is bizarre to imagine that the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is somehow an argument against modern life.
It is thanks to modern farming techniques that the UK has not experienced such an outbreak since 1967, while the disease has remained rife throughout the developing world (1).

Modern Life Is Rubbish deserves to be heard, not only to show how much Blur changed over the years, but because it still stands up and holds its own against anything they came up with later in their career.
However, any blur fan that knows his salt would have realised that MLIR is almost totally ignored.
In a sentence, Modern Life Is Rubbish showcases blur flexing their muscles, stepping away from the mainstream of Leisure and embracing their roots and influences.

 Blur Album Reviews
Granted, Modern Life Is Rubbish could probably use some of The Kinks’ (their obvious musical role models, albeit updated with a more modern new wave and/or psychedelic sheen) simplicity, but the band’s chaotic and seemingly disjointed chords always seem to coalesce into oddly catchy pop songs.
Albarn’s Cockney accent may also take some getting used to, but Modern Life Is Rubbish was nevertheless an awfully impressive album overall, though it's yet another in an endless parade of '90s albums where less certainly would've been more.
Blur is one of the most interesting bands of the past ten years (British or American), and since their entertaining but inconsistent albums have always been highlighted by their singles, it would stand to reason that The Best Of Blur would indeed be just that.

As a response to the dominance of grunge in the U.K. and their own decreasing profile in their homeland -- and also as a response to Suede's sudden popularity -- Blur reinvented themselves with their second album, Modern Life Is Rubbish, abandoning the shoegazing and baggy influences that dominated Leisure for traditional pop.
On the surface, Modern Life may appear to be an homage to the Kinks, David Bowie, the Beatles, and Syd Barrett, yet it isn't a restatement, it's a revitalization.
However, the record teems with life, since Blur refuse to treat their classicist songs as museum pieces.

Ambitious and yet still full of hooks, it is arguably their most appealing record—particularly as it retains its underdog status in comparison to the ubiquity of Parklife, the snotty triumphalism of The Great Escape and the self-consciousness of Blur.
Like Modern Life Is Rubbish, the band’s follow-up—Parklife—retains the very British qualities of farce and self-doubt, but covered their art-pop leanings with an increased emphasis on melody.

Modern Life Is Rubbish received good reviews in Britain, peaking at number 15 on the charts, yet it failed to make much of an impression in the U.S. Modern Life Is Rubbish turned out to be a dry run for Blur's breakthrough album, Parklife.

This is as far away from the new material as you can get and to be honest, it's a nice break from what you imagine from Blur nowadays (which I also really like).
'Modern Life is Rubbish' is hardly as well known as 'Parklife' for example but it includes the beginnings of what made 'Parklife' so very popular.

Modern Life is Rubbish (1993), Blur’s second album, is an album of two halves.
To put it simply, the first section of Modern Life is Rubbish (whose title incidentally was taken from a piece of grafitti in London) is good, while the closing half is of a poorer standard.
Side A illustrates that this is a band that can write catchy, quirky pop songs, while side B demonstrates that they are just as capable of penning ordinary, tedious tunes.

Modern life in the UK is a mix of unhappy jobs, isolation and material wants, according to a survey published today.
Spending time in the developing world helps people to rediscover the difference between consumer wants and true needs, such as for food and shelter, but also for community membership and the need to help others and cooperate with them.
There is a general feeling of dissatisfaction amongst people who want more from life than the daily grind.
