Modern rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modern rock is term commonly used to describe a rock music format found on commercial radio stations.
Generally beginning with late 1970s punk but referring especially to any rock music of the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s, the phrase "modern rock" is used to differentiate the music from "classic rock", which focuses upon music recorded in the 1960s and 1970s.
Some indie rock fans also criticize alternative rock as being no different from modern rock, and consider both to be imitations; however, alternative rock is seen as having once been the same as indie rock, unlike modern rock, which is considered to be a product of radio airplay.

Modern Rock Tracks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Modern Rock Tracks chart is a music chart that has appeared in Billboard magazine since September 10, 1988.
The chart was introduced as a companion to the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and its creation was prompted by the explosion of "alternative" music on American radio in the late 1980s.
Modern Rock Tracks is solely based on radio airplay and it is a component chart of the Hot 100.

 Who Killed Rock Radio?
REV 105, by defining modern rock in a broad but informed way, and by avoiding the mindnumbing repetition that drives dedicated music fans crazy, violated two tenets of the ratings-obsessed radio programmer: Keep your playlist tight, and pound the hits till your most fickle listeners are familiar with them.
Modern Rock stations that were lucky to own two percent of the listening audience in 1991 (pre-Nevermind) now find themselves desperate to hold onto a less loyal audience twice that size.
But Modern Rock radio has deeper ties to the free-form FM '70s, and the belief that artists are worthy enough to feature three or four of their tracks at a time -- not just the hits -- and that rock'n'roll stands for youth and rebellion and uncompromising personal visions.

The death of rock and roll has been a topic discussed at length this past year, but according to Arbitron's national format trends for the Spring 2005 survey, reports of its demise at radio have been greatly exaggerated.
Modern rock, on the other hand, has fallen to its lowest level of listenership since 1998.
The 3.0 share modern rock has for Spring 2005 is the lowest listenership the format has had in five years, or Spring 2000.

ART OF MODERN ROCK: THE POSTER EXPLOSION is set to be the first and last word on the finest rock concert posters of the past fifteen years, a period of unprecedented explosion in poster-making activity for both the biggest names in rock as well as the most highly regarded new rock acts.
Modern rock posters, while wildly individual, encompass cutting-edge stylistic approaches and a daring, often controversial use of imagery.
Authors Paul Grushkin and Dennis King, two of rock's premier historians and experts on rock and roll art, gathered the posters from nearly 8,000 submissions worldwide, and provide the critical overview and augmented, detailed profiles of the artists as well as commentary on key works.

Modern Rock Acts Promote Music Outside Radio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Record companies are attempting to adapt to modern rock's recent marginalization on the airwaves in major markets like Philadelphia, Miami, New York and Washington, D.C. by emphasizing other options for building buzz.
But with modern outlets WPLY (Y100) Philadelphia and WHFS Washington, D.C., and active rock WZTA (Zeta) Miami dropping the rock format and WXRK (K-Rock) New York radically reducing the number of current titles it spins, many in the industry are wondering if modern rock sales can sustain that momentum.
Still, labels are not giving up on radio play for modern acts, even if they are doing their best to get by without it.
