Issaquah, Washington's Modest Mouse is known in indie rock circles for its angular, warping chords, poetic, desolate lyrics, and intricate, mesmerizing drums.
Initially the four-track project of a suburban malcontent named Isaac Brock, by 1993 Modest Mouse was a bona fide band, featuring Brock, permanent drummer Jeremiah Green, former bassist John Wickhart, and former second guitarist Dann Gallucci (who went on to cofound the Murder City Devils).
A slew of releases followed soon after: also in 1996, the band put out their Interstate 8 EP, and followed that with 1997's critically acclaimed The Lonesome Crowded West LP (both were on Up).

Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out Of Something - Review
Although Modest Mouse sort of built up a name for themselves with full-length releases like This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Talk About and The Lonesome Crowded West, they'd been around for a long time before that putting out 7 inch singles and EPs (including the excellent, out-of-print Interstate 8).
Having come from lots of different releases and different spans of time, it's interesting to hear that actually this is still quite a cohesive release and also shows that the group has always been doing some pretty interesting things as just a trio of musicians.
While it may not be the best way to introduce yourself to the group, there is a lot of good music and if you're a completist, it's a hell of a lot easier than finding all the original single releases.

The most experimental of Modest Mouse songs often sound as if they were recorded in slow motion: Eric Judy's bass oozes, drummer Jeremiah Green sounds like he's pounding on mud and Isaac Brock sings through a glue-filled mouth.
