The band had planned a string of shows on the West Coast of the United States in August of 2006, but a recent update on Epic Records' Modest Mouse site states that the shows will be postponed due to the band working on recording their new album.

Initially the four-track project of a suburban malcontent named Isaac Brock, by 1993 Modest Mouse was a bona fide band, featuring Brock, permanent drummer Jeremiah Green, former bassist John Wickhart, and former second guitarist Dann Gallucci (who went on to cofound the Murder City Devils).

Modest Mouse is clearly not like other bands and is often not accepted or liked because of its pure creativity and crude originality.
I agree that most of the people who get exposed to Modest Mouse off of MTV or radio may not be as strong as fans because if they are originally listening to MTV and radio, they are not looking for this type of band.
Modest Mouse is indeed excellent and bring almost a new relaxed, confusing music that is purely not meant for the radio or mtv but for the mind of individuals, if even that.

I'd like to start out by saying that Modest Mouse is probaly one of the best indie bands to ever form and they're one of my personal favorites (even though I'm not a life long fan).
Modest Mouse has been my favorite band for the past five plus years - absolute favorite album is 'this is a long drive...' but I pretty much will listen to any of them.
I heard from the radio station (1077.7 The End) that I listen to, that Modest Mouse is working on another CD and that they plan to release it sometime this year or the beginning of next year.

On the group's fourth proper album, a mightier Mouse refine their weirdness and become a pop band while grasping at dark truths that pop ordinarily denies.
This is a more varied album than The Moon and Antarctica (which did seem to have only one speed), and with the return of original member Dan Gallucci, Brock appears to have revived the heavy lead guitar playing of their early work.
Gone is pretty much everything they’ve learned in the last eight years or so, ditching all the progress they’ve made in favor of just making another Modest Mouse record.

They're a little frightening with their exploration of anger, loneliness and misery, but also quite beautiful in their brushes by the very edges of the universe (try listening to this while looking at fractal pictures), and the evocative wording ("And right after I die the dogs start floating up towards the glowing sky").
If you know nothing about Modest Mouse and are curious to hear some of their most characteristic work, "The Moon & Antarctica" is a good place to start.
The eclectic sound that I love about Modest Mouses is great, and the lyrics are second to none.
