  Modest Mussorgsky Summary
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839-1881) is generally acclaimed the finest of the group of Russian composers known as the Mighty Five.
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (Russian: Моде́ст Петро́вич Му́соргский, Modest Petrovič Musorgskij), also Modeste, Moussorgsky (March 9/21, 1839 – March 16/28, 1881), one of five Russian composers known as The Mighty Handful, was an innovator of Russian music.
At the age of six, Modest began receiving piano lessons from his mother; his progress was sufficiently rapid that he was able to perform a John Field concerto for family and friends just three years later.

Modest Moussorgsky was also a dilettante composer who made his career as a civil servant.
Moussorgsky was depressive by nature, and after the death of his mother, in 1865, he took to drink, leaving many of his scores half-finished.
When Moussorgsky failed to complete a Symphony in D, begun in 1861, Balakirev and Vladimir Stasov, an influential critic, and friend of the "Five", regretfully agreed that "Moussorgsky is almost an idiot", which, of course, was certainly not the case.

Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1891), the Russian composer best known for "Boris Godunov," the great opera about the 16th century Russian ruler, and for the piano composition "Pictures At An Exhibition" (though the latter is most often heard in the orchestral transcription written by French composer Maurice Ravel).
Born into a wealthy family, Moussorgsky was an army officer by the age of 17, but resigned his commission to become a member of a group of five composers of nationalist music.
Moussorgsky's rich style was held in disdain in the years following his death, and so most of his works had to be revised (or "corrected") by his friend Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov.

Besides being one of the best modern recordings of this masterpiece about a Macbeth-like czar who murders his way to the top, this five-disc set (sold for the cost of three) presents the opera both in its original 1869 version and in its 1872 revision, side by side.
Here you have Moussorgskys OWN versions and not the softer, in my opinion a bit duller Rimsky-Korsakov version.
