Modibo Keita (or Kéïta); (4 June 1915 - 16 May 1977) was the first President of Mali (1960 - 1968) and the Prime Minister of the Mali Federation.
Modibo Keïta was elected constituent assembly president of the Mali Federation on July 20, 1960, which consisted of French Sudan, and Senegal.
A monument for Modibo Keita, was dedicated in Bamako on June 6, 1999.

Willoughby announced today that Modibo Keita, 45, of the 1200 block of 5th Street, NW, Washington, D.C., was sentenced yesterday, November 21, 2005, on the charge of criminal negligence of a vulnerable adult.
Keita was charged with burning a vulnerable adult group home resident on August 29, 2004, by seating that vulnerable adult in scalding bath water that Keita had improperly heated on a stove top.
Keita entered a pre-indictment plea of guilty on September 13, 2005, to one count of misdemeanor criminal negligence.

Keita's struggle to impose a socialist economy met with a singular lack of success.
Coupled with these problems had been Keita's steady movement toward political absolutism, culminating in the creation in 1967 of the "Committee for the Defense of the Revolution." In effect, the committee replaced the weak National Assembly, which finally was dissolved last January as "obsolete."
