S7G reactor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The S7G reactor was a prototype naval reactor designed for the United States Navy to provide electricity generation and propulsion on warships.
It was tested in the early 1980s at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory's Modifications and Additions Reactor Facility (MARF) in Ballston Spa, New York.
The design also had the advantage of negative feedback: an increase in reactor power caused the water to expand, thermalizing more neutrons in a region where they would not be absorbed by the fuel, lowering the power.

 S7G reactor
It was tested in the early 1980s at the Modifications and Additions Reactor Facility (MARF).
Instead of moveable hafnium-based control rods, which are used in all other United States Navy reactors, reactivity in the S7G core was controlled by stationary hafnium-clad tubes partially filled with water.
The "S7G" designation indicates that it was designed for use in submarines and was the 7th such design by General Electric.

Breeding in the Reactors at Hanford   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The early Hanford reactors also were equipped with various safety and control instruments that measured temperature, pressure, moisture, neutron fluxb and (radio)activity levels in the byproducts of the fission reaction.
As the reactor shutdowns began at Hanford in the mid-1960's, operators and scientists struggled to extend the viability of the remaining piles by developing environmentally acceptable means of effluent disposal.
Additionally, the 1982 summer outage revealed center transverse contraction resulting in a total sag of about three inches, and tube elongation to the extent that many connector clearances were rated as "minimal." As N Reactor struggled to remain a crucial piece of America's defense arsenal, many system upgrades were undertaken.

Additionally, during the eleven-month duration of the test, the entire reactor was operated in an atmosphere that contained 50-100 percent CO The final results indicated that graphite temperatures up to 600°C, with a gas atmosphere between 50-85 percent CO, produced no significant rise in the oxidation rate.
Additionally, they "seated" all C-metal columns firmly against the rear end caps before the coolant flow was raised, and they tried to maintain as low a water flow as possible around these slugs, in order to minimize the water turbulence that caused cocking and chattering.
Additionally, the higher melting temperature of zirconium was thought to be a safety factor in reactor incidents that involved high heat caused by loss of coolant.

Modifications to a number of units also are proposed including: Alkylation Unit (cooling tower, effluent treating vessels); Fractionator Changes (HCU Fractionator, and several debutanizers, depropanizers, and deisoobutanizers); Hydrotreater No. 4 (main reactor); Catalytic Reforming Unit No.2 (debutanizer); and changes to the refinery flare, vapor recovery systems, and storage tanks.
Additionally, many of the related projects in the vicinity of the Refinery and the terminals are in various stages of construction and have gone through the approval process at the local agency level.
Additionally, with the exception of one intersection near the Refinery, the short-term construction impacts are considered insignificant and are not expected to affect traffic patterns in these areas, even if related projects in these areas were to overlap with the proposed project construction.

Additionally, the TA-18 operations are located in a canyon which is difficult to secure, resulting in increasingly high costs to maintain a security infrastructure for the special nuclear materials (SNM) used and stored at the site.
To accommodate the relocated TA-18 operations, modifications to the DAF would include: modifications to internal walls, floors, and ceilings; addition of bulk and penetration-shielding materials; demolition of fire-suppression and other water systems; and, raceway additions connecting the critical assemblies to their control rooms and power supplies.
Facility Accidents The accident analyses considered a wide spectrum of potential operational accident scenarios including uncontrolled reactivity insertion, inadvertent criticality, fire, explosion (i.e., hydrogen detonation), and earthquake, covering both the range of TA-18 activities and the radioactive material at risk.

In addition, the facility stores highly radioactive spent fuel in cooling pools located near the plant; a loss of water to the pools could spark a nuclear fire that would render a large swath of the state uninhabitable.
The fuel elements for the reactor are contained in a pool of water 30 feet deep, with eight to 10 foot concrete walls.

Among these changes are modifications to processes for pre-treatment of the salt (i.e., supernatant and saltcake) and sludge components of the high-level waste before vitrification, and modifications in methods used for onsite disposal of the immobilized low radioactivity waste fraction (saltstone) resulting from salt pre-treatment.
These modifications, which would be implemented before the facility is operated with radioactive waste, address three types of systems: process vessel ventilation systems, building ventilation systems, and systems to prevent or reduce releases of [[Page 18591]] hazardous chemicals.
The proposed action includes safety modifications, which would be implemented before the facility is operated with radioactive waste, to substantially reduce or eliminate the probability and consequences of these failures resulting from a severe earthquake.

* Low-activation materials: In fission reactors, one is forced to deal with the radioactive byproducts of the fission process, but in fusion reactors one generally has a choice of what materials to expose to neutrons produced by the fusion process.
A major problem for fusion reactors is developing materials (such as for the reactor vacuum vessel structure) which can be exposed to high levels of neutron bombardment without becoming permanently radioactive.
