Modoc County is a county located in California's far northeast corner, bounded by Oregon to the north and Nevada to the east.
The northern half of the county is the Modoc Plateau, a 1 mile (1.6 km) high expanse of lava flows, cinder cones, juniper flats, pine forests, and seasonal lakes.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.60% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county was and is home to four major tribal groups, the Klamath and Modoc, the Pit River or, and the Paiute.
The county was a crossroads for the which brought settlers north from Nevada to the Oregon Trail and south to trails leading into California's central valley.

It was perceived that the area was outside the jurisdiction of California and the Utah Territory (Nevada having not been formed yet.) By the early 1860s, with a survey of California boundaries, it was discovered that Honey lake was part of the Golden State and belonged to Plumas County.
But Quincy, the county seat of Plumas and the settlement nearest the valley, lay beyond a spur of the mountain range and was cut off from all communication for at least four months of the year.
The thieving and treacherous Washoe ranged south of the lake north of it the extremely hostile Pit River and Modoc tribes, and east of it the large and loose federation of the Paiute.

The Modoc County Historical Museum is located at the southeast corner of Main Street and County Road 56 in Alturas, California.
The gun collection was begun around 1870 by Nathan Rogers, of Merced, California, and had been continued by his son, Charles Rogers, until his death in 1932.
