The movement in art paralleled such developments as the Theory of Relativity in physics; the increasing integration of internal combustion and industrialization; and the rise of social sciences in public policy.
The rise of cinema and "moving pictures" in the first decade of the twentieth century gave the modern movement an artform which was uniquely its own, and again, created a direct connection between the perceived need to extend the "progressive" tradition of the late nineteenth century, even if this conflicted with then established norms.
This wave of the modern movement broke with the past in the first decade of the twentieth century, and tried to redefine various artforms in a radical manner.

 Rock and roll
Countless British youths listened to and were influenced by the RandB and rock and roll pioneers and began forming their own bands to play the new music with an intensity and drive seldom found in white American acts outside of Elvis.
Foremost among these was The Beatles, comprised of four youths from Liverpool who became the single most important and influential act in the history of rock and roll.
Pretty soon everybody was smoking it, and it seemed to be all right.” The relationship of rock music to the hippie and counterculture movements, which espoused use of marijuana and other drugs, is complex and intertwined, and it is not always clear in which direction influence flowed.

The problem of 'youth' for youth work
Youth culture, likewise, is seen as lacking the profundity or longevity of the alternatives.
Youth work was based upon an assumption that adults led young people through a period of ‘storm and stress’ and danger toward the stability of adulthood.
Youth workers have historically often made the same mistake - pleading for special treatment for those they identify as their clients, while overlooking the more acute needs of others - as currently exemplified in the debate concerning the supposed benefits of having a Minister for Youth.

 Youth Subcultures
Youth culture also exists as shown in their distinct (2) morality: there is a strong emphasis on liberation from all restraints and on a guiltless pursuit of pleasure.
Youth is viewed as an active category - a sociocultural view of youth is introduced where youth are involved in the development of society through their creations.
Youth workers should, through research and observation, seek to identify the various subculture groups within the community in which the youth group operates, to ensure that the group is able to help to meet the needs of the different groups.

 Mods & Rockers - webBikeWorld
I was fascinated by both movements in my youth, having learned all about them from my much hipper -- and older -- cousins, who seemed to be right at the forefront of everything that was cool in the '50's and '60's.
After the media caught on to the movements and fanned the flames whilst looking for a good story, a fight between the groups broke out in the town of Clacton and was parlayed by the press into a class warfare byline.
Both movements sort of faded away with the "flower power" evolution in the late '60's, and would probably be completely forgotten if it wasn't for the recent insatiable demand for retro by the Baby Boomers.

Science Fair Projects - The Who
They became one of the most popular bands among the British Mods, a social movement of the early 60s who rejected the "greaser" music favored by the Rockers.
Another early favorite, showing Townshend's way with words, was the 1966 single "Substitute", which included the line, "I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth." The 1967 hit single "Pictures Of Lily", a tribute to masturbation, was possibly one of the most accomplished of all European contributions to psychedelic music.
Although the intended album was not released until reconstructed as a radio play for the BBC in 2000, the Who included many of the project's best songs in Who's Next (1971), which would become their most successful album.
