Modus tollens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modus tollens (Latin for "mode that denies") is the formal name for indirect proof or proof by contrapositive (contrapositive inference), often abbreviated to MT.
Modus tollens became somewhat legendary when it was used by Karl Popper in his proposed response to the problem of induction, Falsificationism.

Modus ponens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Logic, Modus ponens (Latin: mode that affirms) is a valid, simple argument form (often abbreviated to MP).
A propositional argument using modus ponens is said to be deductive.
Modus ponens can also be referred to as affirming the antecedent or "Law of Detachment".

 Modus Tollens
Modus Tollens is not as straightforward as its companion, Modus Ponens.
Although common in argument, a Modus Tollens is not necessarily true, as the major premise (If X is true then Y is true) says nothing about falsehood.
Modus Tollens is the root of falsification, as proposed by Karl Popper and since used as the cornerstone of scientific proof.

An argument can be valid even though it has a false premise; one has to distinguish between validity and soundness.

The premise lines of Modus Tollens are a conditional and the negation of its consequent.
The premise lines of this inference are a conditional and the opposite of its consequent, but not the negation of its consequent.

The OpenScience Project » Elliot Sober on the Design Argument
It isn’t just defenders of the design hypothesis who have fallen into the trap of supposing that there is a probabilistic version of modus tollens.
Under modus tollens, if a theory X says that Y is probable, and we learn that in fact Y is not the case, then we should conclude that theory X is probably false.
It is relatively easy to find an example which shows that the probabilistic version of modus tollens is incorrect.

 Footnotes
The Wason card problem is often diagnosed by psychologists by appeal to rules of inference like modus ponens and modus tollens.
The foundational rule known as modus ponens says that given a conditional 9#9 and the antecedent p, one can infer to q.
Another rule, also at the foundations of logic and mathematics (and formal disciplines generally), is modus tollens: 10#10, i.e., from a conditional and the falsity of its consequent one can infer to the falsity of its antecedent.

If you go through it with a fine tooth comb, you will find that it is a version of modus ponens, with X now being "The bells are ringing" and Y being "There is a funeral going on." You will notice that X and Y are now the opposite way round from the previous version.
The fact is, that statement is a perfectly logical version of modus ponens.
In this exercise, each of the deductions is either modus ponens or modus tollens, and it may be valid or invalid.

I'm not sure if modus tollens works in any system of formal logic or if L must meet certain preconditions.
What I'm getting at is this: Assuming L lends itself to the application of modus tollens.
If Q can only be well-formed if either Q or NOT Q can be derived in L, then modus tollens would be inapplicable by definition.

 Argument Forms
In fact, arguments of this form are so common that the form itself has a name, Modus Ponens, which we will usually abbreviate as M.P. On the other hand, consider what happens when we construct a truth-table for testing the validity of a distinct, though superficially similar, argument form:
In arguments of this form, both premises are true on the first and on the third lines of the truth-table.
Although it might be mistaken for M.P. at a casual glance, the fallacy—unlike its valid cousin—does not guarantee the truth of its conclusion.
