Mohammad Ali was not afraid to chalange the Sultan and invented Syria in 1831 and cuased a hard situation in this area that was only solved with intervention of european powers in 1840.
Mohammad Ali was forced to withdraw from Syria, but in 1841 he was made the ruler of Sudan aswell under the Sultan.

The mosque is the Tomb of Mohammad Ali and is also known as the Alabaster Mosque because of the extensive use of this fine material from Beni Suef.
The mosque of Mohamed Ali is in the centre of the Citadel, it is a magnificent mosque with great architecture.
