Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was born on November 2, 1929, in a small village Pir Kot, Ghakkar Mandi, Wazirabad Tehsil.
Rafiq Tarar got his law degree from Punjab University Law College in 1951 and started his legal practice in Gujranwala.
Tarar is noted for his legal scholarship, his honesty and devotion to justice, which is infused by a firm personal religious faith.

Election officials said Tarar, 68, a former judge of the Supreme Court, won the presidential election with big majorities in the voting by two chambers of the national parliament and four provincial assemblies, which constitute the electoral college for the presidential election.
Rafiq Tarar has been nominated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, even though he has little political experience.
Mr Tarar had to be given permission to stand in the election by the Lahore High Court after the Electoral Commission disqualified him for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the judiciary.

Pakistan’s ousted President Rafiq Tarar last night said he was removed from the post under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) promulgated by military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf who took over as the head of the state.
Tarar, in a statement in Lahore, said “I was told several days ago that appointment of the chief executive as the president is a must for the completion of the government's agenda and achievement of several national objectives.
Though pictures of Musharraf hugging Tarar during their meeting last morning were shown on the state TV, it was evident he has not resigned and left in a huff, informed sources here said.

Pakistan's ousted president Rafiq Tarar on Wednesday night said he was removed from the post under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) promulgated by military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf who took over as the head of the state.
The statement announcing that Musharraf has taken over and said 'Mohammad Rafiq Tarar has ceased to hold the office of the president with immediate effect' was apparently issued after Tarar's refusal.
Though pictures of Musharraf hugging Tarar during their meeting on Wednesday morning were shown on the state television, it was evident the latter had not resigned and left in a huff, informed sources in Islamabad said.

The Supreme Court, however, in its unanimous judgment, held that chief executive Pervez Musharraf validly removed Mohammad Rafiq Tarar and assumed the office of the president on June 20, 2001.
The court accepted the contentions made by the government lawyers that Rafiq Tarar remained in the office from October 12, 1999, to June 20, 2001, by virtue of the Proclamation of Emergency and not by force of his election.
It was further argued that Rafiq Tarar had been performing his functions on and in accordance with the advice of chief executive under the new dispensation and was party to various legislative and executive actions of the present government.

Reports from Pakistan since the April 6 test of its Ghauri Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) suggest that Pakistan has other ballistic missiles under development and is planning to accelerate its missile development programme.
