  Sea kayaking in Loch Moidart
A 14.6 km paddle around the reefs of Loch Moidart south channel, out into the Sound of Arisaig and returning by the north channel: 10/10/04.
We left Glasgow at 7:20am on Sunday 10/10/04 and drove north on the A82 to Fort William where we turned west on the A830 and finally arrived at Loch Moidart Arisaig at 11:00am after several stops on the way.
It is made of the bleached skeletons of red algae and is supposed to be unique in Scotland but there are others, including this one in Moidart and another on an islet near Arisaig.

Donald, 13th Chief of Clanranald, was obliged by his tenure of Moidart to furnish the Earl of Argyll with a galley of sixteen oars between the point of Ardnamurchan and Assynt for fourteen days each year.
Robert II's charter of 1 January 1372/3 confirming this grant details Moidart with the castle of Eilean Tioram, Arisaig, Morar and Knoydart, the islands of Eigg, Rum, Uist with the castle of Benbecula, Barra, 'Hert' (probably St Kilda), and the lands of Sunart, 'Lettirlochetle' (probably Letterlochiel), Ardgour, Auliston and Lochaber.
Moidart was among lands claimed by the crown after the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles.

This is the sea loch at the western end of Glen Moidart and is fed by the River Moidart which flows through Glen Moidart to meet the loch at Kinlochmoidart.
The island of Eilean Shona almost fills the mouth of the loch as it widens and Castle Tioram is situated in the outer reaches of this loch.
This spot, which is about a mile and a quarter up the glen from Ardmolich on the A861, is in the lower part of Glen Moidart and there is space to park nearby.

In 1540, John of Moidart (Ian Mùideatach), Chief-or Captain- of the MacDonalds of Clanranald, fell foul of the Royal Government during King James V's visit to the Hebrides, and was imprisoned, with other Chiefs of the Isles.
Donald Gregory, the nineteenth century historian of the Highlands, claims that Huntly managed to advance right into Moidart to restore Ranald, but there appears to be no evidence for such a contention.
Surrounded by enemies, Ranald is unlikely to have felt very safe in Moidart, and he returned east with the rest of Huntly's army.

In the Highlands the form MacAndrew is more commonly found and this family is thought to be connected with the Clan Anrias, a sept of Clan Ross who were also associated with the Clan Chattan federation from the beginning of the 15th century.
The Clan Ross are sometimes called Clann Aindrea (the race of Andrew), and Gillanders, as a surname, is often equated with Ross, being a frequently found amongst the early Ross', whose descent was from Fearchar Mac-an-t-Sagairt, a Hereditary Abbot of Applecross.
Early in the 15th century, another family, the Clan Andrish, natives of Moidart (not far from Applecross), reputedly founded by a Donald MacGillandrish, settled at Connage in Petty, and became embodied into the Confederation of Clan Chattan, under its Mackintosh Chief.

It is the title of a Scottish country dance which originated as seven men throwing down their work tools and leaping for joy at the sight of the Prince's ship approaching.

Moidart is in a remote location, on the other side of Loch Linnhe, it is not often we go there as a club partly because of the trouble with getting on the last Corran ferry across the loch.
There are no munro's in Moidart but it is very rugged and contains a number of very fine peaks, most notably the impressive Garbh Bheinn.
Members shall be aware of and accept these risks and agree to be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
