LEICESTERSHIRE, a midland county of England, bounded N. by Nottinghamshire, E. by Lincolnshire and Rutland, S.E. by Northamptonshire, S.W. by Warwickshire, and N.W. by Derbyshire, also touching Staffordshire on the W. The area is 823.6 sq.
The surface of the county is an undulating tableland, the highest eminences being the rugged hills of Charnwood Forest in the north-west, one of which, Bardon Hill, has an elevation of 912 ft. The county belongs chiefly to the basin of the Trent, which forms for a short distance its boundary with Derbyshire.
Leicestershire probably originated as a shire in the 10th century, and at the time of the Domesday Survey was divided into the four wapentakes of Guthlaxton, Framland, Goscote and Gartree.

The canal line to Moira was also opened during this year while to the south the main line of the canal was well on its way to completion.
Just to the south of Moira the disused Donisthorpe Colliery site was also to be redeveloped (by the local council) and would include a stretch of the canal in what was to become Donisthorpe Country Park.
The canal line to Moira headed west away from Willesley and is shown as a line of water on my road map - though sadly this is wrong as the canal is filled in.

 The ASHBY CANAL Leicestershire
The railway mania of the 1830’s and 40’s did little for its fortunes and in 1846 the canal was sold to the Midland Railway for £110,000, a considerable loss against construction costs of £184,000.
A major breach at Moira in 1918 nearly closed the canal permanently, only the strategic importance of the coal supplies during the 1st World War allowed it to survive.
Restoring to the Moira Furnace will result in the Ashby Canal becoming the focus of a major leisure area, providing a mix of industrial heritage, rural recreation and nature conservation as well as a gateway to the National Forest.

The length of the joint line from Moira West to Nuneaton-Ashby Junction was 29 miles and was the only joint line of any importance that was built by the two companies.
The only other - also in Leicestershire, was at the Enderby branch which left the main line at Narborough and ran 2¾ miles to Enderby Quarry and was used entirely for freight.
