Mokhotlong is the main centre of a vast mountainous area in the east of the country.
Mokhotlong is about 5km off the main road, it is worth trying to reach this junction no matter which direction you're heading.
In Mokhotlong it may be worth going to some of the stores the day before you plan to make the journey, to see if you can organise a ride.

Perched on the banks of the Mokhotlong River, MOKHOTLONG, whose name means "place of the bald ibis" (although they are rarely seen these days), began life as a police post in 1905.
An airstrip was constructed in 1948 and a rudimentary road link built in the 1950s, but Mokhotlong continued to get the bulk of its supplies by pony from Natal, via Sani, for a long time afterwards.
Not much happens in town, which is dominated by hurriedly built and decidedly plain breeze-block buildings that compare unfavourably with the immaculately constructed dry-stone-walled dwellings of the surrounding countryside.

Improving soil fertility is one of the reasons why farmers tend to adopt potatoes in Mokhotlong (Serage, 2000).
This study was not aimed at studying the effect crop rotation in Mokhotlong, and further research on crop rotation in order to develop appropriate rotation programmes that can best suit the farmers and solve their food security problems, is therefore necessary.
A sustainable crop rotation programme would be the one that caters for the declining soil fertility and ever increasing soil erosion in Mokhotlong.

The Mokhotlong area forms part of the ‘Roof of Africa' scenic route.
It is at the top of the Drakensberg Ridge which includes Southern Africa’s highest mountain ‘Thabana Ntlenyana’ at 3482 metres.
Mokhotlong means ‘Place of the Bald Ibis’ and is rich in high montane bird life including eagles and vultures.
