Mokoia Island is located in Lake Rotorua in New Zealand.
The island is a rhyolite dome, rising to 180 metres above the lake surface.
The island is sacred to Maori of the Arawa iwi, and is the location of one of the most famous legends of New Zealand, that of Hinemoa and Tutanekai, which has parallels with the classical Greek tale of Hero and Leander, but with a happier ending.

Mokoia Island is a special place 2km off-shore, which has become home for some of New Zealand's most endangered species and is one of the most important wildlife refuges in the Bay of Plenty.
Perhaps the most important impact on the Mokoia environment by European settlers was the accidental introduction of the Norway rats which were already well established by the year the Treaty of Waitangi was signed.
Although Mokoia is still an island refuge, it is special in that it is a mainland island reserve and not an offshore island.

The Island was once a thriving village to Maori and missionaries with an estimated peak population of 2000 or more.

It was to Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua that I went recently with these words of the naturalist Guthrie-Smith in mind to see Hihi, the stitchbird, but although I saw very many Tieke, the saddleback, sadly I did not see any stitchbirds.
A single self-sustaining population of the species of several thousand remained on Little Barrier Island until the 1980s when in an attempt to establish further populations and ensure the long term survival of the species, the Department of Conservation translocated Hihi to various off shore islands as well as Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua.
In 1994, 40 Hihi (20 males and 20 females) were transferred to Mokoia Island but, according to a recent study aimed at trying at ascertain the reasons for the high mortality rate published in the New Zealand Veterinary Journal, the current population remains at about 40.

I think Biddy made the decision to smuggle Kit to the Island because she loved Kit and couldn't bear to live without him.I would have taken my cat if I was faced with the same problem.The closest bird sancuary to us is Whale Island.
I have only been to Mokoia Island.I think Islands are good places for sanctuaries because there is not much contact with humans or other introduced predators that they are not used to.
