 Language
Language families can be divided into smaller phylogenetic units, conventionally referred to as branches of the family, because the history of a language family is often represented as a tree diagram.
Languages that cannot be reliably classified into any family are known as language isolates.
A language isolated in its own branch within a family, such as Greek within Indo-European, is often also called an isolate, but such cases are usually clarified.

SIL has been accused of going against general linguistic community consensus (and contrary to the opinion of the majority of the speakers themselves in some cases) as to what constitutes a separate language (as opposed to a dialect).
SIL also attributes separate language status to "Yinglish", an English vernacular spoken by some Jewish Americans which is to some degree influenced by the Yiddish and Hebrew languages.

A language is a system of symbols, generally known as lexemes and the rules by which they are manipulated.
Though language is commonly used for communication, it is not synonymous with it.
One should be careful about the underlying classification principle for groups of languages which have apparently a geographical name: besides areal linguistic units, the taxa of the genetic classification (language families) are often given names which themselves or parts of which refer to geographical areas.

 Ethnologue Did You Mean ethnologue
The Ethnologue contains statistics for 6,912 languages in the 15th ion, released in 2005 (up from 6,809 in the 14th ion, released 2000) and gives the number of speakers, location, dialects, linguistic affiliations, availability of the Bible, etc. It is currently the most comprehensive existing language inventory, along with the Linguasphere Register.
As is inevitable in an enterprise so enormous, the Ethnologue contains some errors, some of which it fixes at every ion; for instance, en route to the 14th ion, some languages such as Chenoua were added, and some rumoured "languages" such as Nemadi or Wutana were removed.
