Battle of Molino del Rey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Molino del Rey turned out to be one of the bloodiest fights of the Mexican-American War.
On September 6, 1847, as the armistice and peace talks that followed the Battle of Churubusco were breaking down, a large number of Mexican troops were observed around a group of low, massive stone buildings known as El Molino del Rey.
General Winfield Scott received reports that the trees masked a foundry for casting cannon and there were rumors that Antonio López de Santa Anna, leader of both the Mexican government and military, in desperate need of ordnance, was sending out church and convent bells to have them melted down and converted to cannon.

Los Pinos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This mill became so important that it was later called el Molino del Rey ("the King's Mill").
In 1853, the Molino del Rey was sold to Dr. José Pablo Martínez del Río, who built the Casa Grande ("Big House") that would later become known as Rancho La Hormiga.
In 1865 the whole property was sold to Emperor Maximilian for a total of 25,000 Mexican pesos.

The land on which the "Molino del Rey" (King's Mill), which was then known as the "Salvador" mill, was located, must have belonged to the crown and, possibly, to Hernán Cortés before it was granted to Alderman Ruy González in 1550.
By this marriage, the hacienda, including real estate, mills and lands of Chapultepec, as well as the Molino del Rey, as it is called in the papers, passed to his family.
In 1919, the Martínez del Río family recovered their property from the government, but they were not able to put it up for sale until 1924.

The same afternoon a large body of the enemy was discovered hovering about the Molino del Rey, within a mile and a third of this village, where I am quartered with the general staff of Worth's division.
For this difficult operation, we were not entirely ready and moreover we might altogether neglect the castle, if as we then hoped, our reconnoissances should prove that the distant southern approaches to the city were more eligible than this southwestern approach.

As the American army moved toward the City of Mexico, Santa Anna had floated rumors that he had been using the old Molino del Rey (King's mill) to foundry cannon.
The approach to the Molino was guarded by a supposedly minor redoubt, the Casa de Mata, about 500 yards west of the Molino and covering the main approach to it and the castle of Chapultepec.
Afterward, there was no evidence of the Molino ever having been used as a foundry and Scott withdrew his forces from the fruits of this hard won victory.
