The nationalists among the Croats and Bosniaks claim that they speak entirely separate languages, whereas the nationalists among the Serbs claim that any divergence in the language is artificial, or claim that the Štokavian dialect is theirs and Čakavian Croat.
This dialect is spoken in three villages of the Italian region of Molise by the descendants of south Slavs who migrated there from the eastern Adriatic coast in the 15th century.
In addition, they have not been influenced by romantic nationalism of the 19th century (unlike the people in Burgenland who were separated but still within the same empire) so they have come to refer to their language merely as "Slavic".

The names SERB and CROAT are just two of dozens of Slav-based communites who have grown in importance over the centuries and have labelled their names to many other small communities, in other words, they are the giants among the smaller Slavic communites there in the Balkan area.
Quite how Serbs and Croats when coming from the same towns are different to each other is quite another issue, the point is that they travelled together, from the same starting point, to the same destination and all for the same reason.

This study examines the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity of the Croatian-speaking minority of Molise and evaluates its potential genetic relatedness to the neighbouring Italian groups and the Croatian parental population.
Intermatch, genetic distance, and admixture analyses highlighted the genetic similarity between the Croatians of Molise and the neighbouring Italian populations and demonstrated that the Croatian-Italian ethnic minority presents features lying between Croatians and Italians.
Since the arrival of this group of Croats to Molise, there would not have been those religious and even cultural barriers that would have usually seperated two groups.
