Mollweide projection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mollweide projection is a non-geometric map projection used for geographic maps of the world, also known as the Babinet projection, or elliptical projection.
The projection was first published by mathematician and astronomer Karl (or Carl) Brandan Mollweide (1774 1825) of Leipzig in 1805 as an improvement upon the Mercator projection.
The Mollweide is a pseudocylindrical projection in which the equator is represented as a straight horizontal line perpendicular to a central meridian one-half its length.

The term "projection" itself, comes from the historical use of a light and a globe as a slide projector to literally project the continents onto a surface where the outlines could be traced.
The Mollweide projection's modifications eliminate area distortion towards the poles that is typical of the cylindrical Mercator projection.

Land mass distortion on the Mollweide projection is minimal as this is an equal-area projection and both South America and Africa appear very similar as they are on the globe.
The Mercator projections are the best to use for determining compass headings (such as a long-distance hiker with only a compass would use) and were traditionally often used for marine navigation.
The Albers equal-area conic projection would be a good choice for mapping distribution of population in the former Soviet Union, as areas are proportional and this projection is often used for mid-latitude large countries with larger east-west than north-south extent.

The reader is cautioned that the Mollweide projection is not implemented with false eastings and false northings as part of the map projection parameters.
The projection is aligned with an appropriate meridian from within the study area, or by selecting an oblique aspect of a map projection that is centered in the study area.

The Mollweide projection is an attempt to moderate the behavior of the equal-area sinusoidal projection.
The Cylindrical Equal-Area projection illustrates the fact that the proportion of the Earth's surface area between a given latitude and the Equator is proportional to one-half the sine of the latitude.
Since the Mollweide projection places the world in an ellipse, the same proportionality law applies to the area between its parallels and the Equator.

One class of projections, interrupted equal-area projections, is especially useful for this purpose, although special processing of raster imagery is required because of the discontinuities in the interrupted areas of the map.
In both the uninterrupted Sinusoidal projection and the uninterrupted Mollweide projection, the areas of maximum distortion are symmetrically positioned in the outer portions of the projections' four quadrants.
Map projection transformation equations, both forward and inverse, for the Sinusoidal and Mollweide projections are given in Snyder (1987).

 Goode's 80th!
In the Mollweide, meridians are halves of ellipses; in the sinusoidal, meridians are formed from arcs of the sine curve.
The two projections are similar in geometric construction but differ in the formulae used to make calculations within that general structure.
Clearly the Mollweide and the sinusoidal are closer together near the central meridian than they are toward the edges of the map where the rate of increase in curvature of the sine wave greatly exceeds the rate of increase in curvature of the ellipse.
