Molly Malone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The song is sung by supporters of Dublin GAA teams and Irish international rugby team, and tells the tale of a beautiful fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but tragically died young, of a fever.
Molly is commemorated in a statue designed by Jeanne Rynhart [1], placed at the bottom of Grafton Street in Dublin, erected to celebrate the city's first millennium in 1987; this statue is known colloquially as 'The Tart With The Cart', 'The Fish With The Dish' and 'The Trollop With The Scallops'.
Certainly, there were many Mary or Molly Malones born in Dublin over the centuries, but no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song, which was not recorded earlier than the early 1880s, when it was published as a work written and composed by James Yorkston, of Edinburgh.

 Irish Historical Mysteries: Molly Malone
Finally, just as it was unwarranted to assume that Molly Malone was Church of Ireland and not Roman Catholic, so too was it capricious to assign her to the seventeenth instead of the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries.
Thus not only was Molly portrayed as a 'Restoration citizen' in seventeenth-century dress, but with blithe disregard for the poor girl's reputation, it was also claimed that she was 'a prosperous trader who freelanced as a prostitute'.
It is submitted that this nineteenth-century image of Molly Malone, backed up by research into period details and of course an intensive study of the origin of the song 'Cockles and Mussels', would have formed a better basis for a statue of the fishmonger.
