On the trip I was told of a morepork frequenting a tree fern on the loop track at the base of Mount Fyffe and took a trip out to look for it though it seemed to have moved on; several Californian quail were hardly compensation though they are quite impressive looking.
This turned out to be my best Kaikoura pelagic with 1 or 2 grey -faced petrels, the adult NZ fl-browed mollymawk plus an adult and immature sub-antarctic fl-browed as well as the regular array of wandering and royal albatrosses and cauta mollymawks; several dusky dolphins passed the boat on the way out.
A single immature came in to the boat 9th Sept.; 1 adult, 1sub-adult showing a dark smudge to the bill tip (otherwise as adult) and 1-2 immatures 12th Oct. Note that the immatures were most likely to have been of this form though separation is difficult.

The volume of birds and variety of species was truly exciting with the bulk of the birds being the pretty little Cape Petrel interspersed with albatross, mollymawk, shearwater, petrel, giant petrel and an occasional Antarctic Fulmar.
Having sighted a fishing trawler about a mile distant, surrounded by what appeared to be large numbers of gulls, we gave chase in the hope of a closer look.
Our reward was to find ourselves in the midst of many hundreds of White-capped Mollymawk, interspersed with lesser numbers of Salvin's and a few Black-browed, a reminder of the bounty of this remote and infrequently visited region.
