Momotus is a genus of the motmots, a family of tropical near passerine birds.
These are birds of dense forests in the tropical New World with soft plumage, which is green on the back becoming blue on the flight feathers and the long tails.
Momotus species, like other motmots, eat small prey such as insects and lizards, and will also take fruit.

momota complex, I am queasy about separation of one of the groups as a separate species, based on essentially no published evidence, while leaving the other taxa as a single species.

The head has a fl crown, which is surrounded by a blue and purple band.
There is a fl eyemask, and the nape of momota is chestnut.

One individual from each of 26 species representing 25 genera and 5 families was analyzed; Momotus momota (Coraciiformes, Momotidae) was used as an outgroup.

An example of this possibility would be Momotus momota bahamensis found only on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
At one time it was thought that the racqueted tail feathers were a result of the birds themselves removing the feathers, but it has been since found that the barbs are loosely attached at that region of the retrix and detach from the feather shaft on their own.
Members of the genus Momotus are the only representatives of the family Momotidae that possess 12 retrices, all other members of the family possess 10.

It occurs in a range of habitat types from sea level to 3100 m, including lowland and montane humid forest and temperate woodland, semi-arid open woodland, plantations and clearings with trees; in Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago) found frequently in gardens and even sandy beaches and open pasture with large trees.
