Mon State is an administrative division of Myanmar.
It is sandwiched between Kayin State on the east, the Andaman Sea on the west, Bago Division on the north and Tanintharyi Division on the south.It has a short border with Thailand's Kanchanaburi Province at its south-eastern tip.
The Mon assisted the British in the war, in return for promises of their own leadership after the defeat of Burma. Hundreds of thousands of Mons who had migrated into Siam returned to their homeland when it came under British rule.

The troops of Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) had forcibly relocated two villages in Ye Township, Mon State in an effort to crush a Mon rebel group which hasn’t signed the ceasefire agreement with the junta.
According to Naing Chan Mon from a Mon news agency, 1000 Burmese soldiers entered Vanmok and Vandan villages in Ye Township and drove away the villagers on 3 and 4 January respectively.
Similarly, villagers in Karen, Karenni and Shan States have been forced to move out of their villages and some of them are randomly killed by the SPDC army.

According to source from the New Mon State Party based on Thai-Burma Border, members of the party in the capital were approached to attend the public event, but the seniors in Moulmein rejected the invitation.
Generally Mon people, especially those who are not members of USDA or of the civil servants, mostly support their national political organization, the Mon National Democratic Front, but the Rangoon Generals abolished it in 1992.

Oct 22, 2005 (DVB) - Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) authorities in southern Burma, have been pressurising Mon national schools, under the supervision of New Mon State Party (NMSP), an armed ethnic national group which signed ceasefire agreements with the junta more than ten years ago.

May 24, 2005 (DVB) - New Mon State Party (NMSP) held a central executive committee (CEC) members meeting from 14-23 May in southern Burma, and elected Gen Nai Htaw Mon to replace the late Nai Htin as their new chairman.
Moreover, CEC members also discussed the matter of Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) forcing “ceasefire” groups to surrender their weapons, and recent flight of Shan State National Army (SSNA) into the jungles and joining forces with Shan State Army (SSA), to fight the junta.
Like other ceasefire groups, NMSP signed ceasefire agreements with the junta in order to solve political problems by peaceful means but they are still unable to persuade the generals to hold serious political talks with them.
