 Mona Lisa Information
Mona Lisa, or La Gioconda (La Joconde), is a 16th-century oil painting on poplar wood by Leonardo da Vinci and is, perhaps, the most famous painting in Western art history or even the world.
Her theory is that the Mona Lisa was the first official portrait of the new Duchess of Milan, which requires that it was painted in spring or summer 1489 (and not 1503).
Mona Lisa is famous for her beautiful ambiguous facial expression and the extreme subtlety of the transitions of tone and color.

And what Neil Jordan’s own Mona Lisa does is to put faces to those voices and give a perspective to the complex modulations on gender and genre that power songs of romance and their time-tested archetypes of lover and beloved.
In Jay Livingston and Ray Evans’s “Mona Lisa” Nat King Cole sings as an observer wondering about a daunting woman’s past and imputing to her the mystery of the ambiguous da Vinci icon.
Mona Lisa’s story, and its strength, lies in how this relationship develops, but that’s easier said than actually described, because Jordan’s skill lies in taking simple templates and letting loose the forces of genre, class, and gender that shape character, feeling, need.

Mona Lisa, previously unreleased, was one of the many scores Kamen wrote for the British cinema back in the late eighties on a minuscule budget.
In the case of Mona Lisa it shows, with the composer's Kurzweiler performing the body of the score while a small string ensemble give the score much needed gravitas.
But this is the first time on CD and although interesting to spot light Kamen's first major film music project this music suffers in the same way as Mona Lisa, in being far too short and ultimately un-involving.

Though it is very difficult, this is what da Vinci accomplished with Mona Lisa -- her facial muscles reflect a dynamic face in motion, not one of someone statically holding a half-smile.
But the expression on Mona Lisa's face has an emotional aspect to it that the vase lacks: it is a direct reflection of her feeling towards us as the object of her gaze.
Though we cannot figure out what Mona Lisa is feeling, and hence what we are feeling towards her, there is definitely one feeling that our encounter with her engenders: that this is no ordinary painting.

They won their first Oscar for best song with Buttons And Bows, from the comedy Western The Paleface (1948); the jaunty number was introduced by Bob Hope who, as the cowardly dentist "Painless" Peter Potter, sang it to Jane Russell; later Dinah Shore had a hit with it.
Other film songs from Evans and Livingston nominated for Oscars included The Cat And The Canary, Tammy (which became a best-seller for Debbie Reynolds in 1957) and Dear Heart, a hit for Andy Williams to music by Henry Mancini.
Perhaps their greatest commercial success was a Christmas song they first called Tinkle Bell, until Livingston's wife persuaded them to rename it Silver Bells; first sung by Bob Hope in The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), it became one of the most popular Christmas songs ever written and sold millions of records.
