For more than two hours the Monacan members, along with their tribal Chief Kenneth Branham, and U.Va. anthropologist Jeff Hantman, discussed Monacan culture and life, and the ways that the Monacan Nation and U.Va. are working together to accurately and fully tell the history of the Monacan people.
All of central and western Virginia, from present-day Richmond to the Blue Ridge Mountains, was Monacan country until the westward expansion of European colonists in the early 17th century.
The Monacan Indian Nation is headquartered on ancestral lands in Amherst County and its members are actively seeking to restore their traditional rituals and language.

The number of people in the Monacan Confederacy has been estimated at 5,200 or more.(1) Once the English colony began to expand beyond the lands of the Powhatan Confederacy, the Monacans came under increasing pressure both from the Cherokees and from the colonist as well.
In 1699 the Monacan village above the James River rapids was settled by a colony of French refugees, called the Huguenots.

 Writing Collaborative History, Facing the Past
The Monacan Tribal Council, in discussing the disposition of the remains with University of Virginia archaeologist Jeffrey Hantman, raised the possibility of having facial reconstructions made from these ancestral remains.
Karenne Wood, director of historic research for the Monacan Indian Nation, and Diane Shields, the coordinator of historic research, applied to the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities for a grant to fund the facial reconstructions.
"Monacan tribal members were eager to see the reproduced likenesses of their ancestors," says Karenne Wood, the director of historic research for the tribe.

One of the oldest groups of indigenous people in Virginia, Monacans were agricultural people who were proficient at farming, hunting, fishing, mining and trading copper, basket-making, pottery, among other traditions.
Monacan history, dating back 10,000 years, is an important part of Virginia's history, wrote Jeffrey Hantman, a Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Virginia, in 1992.
Monacans will be along the Cedar Creek Trail constructing the village beyond the Bridge beginning November 1, 1999; the Interpretive program begins on April 1, 2000.

-century Monacans and what I perceived as the formidable role they played in the Jamestown era in the Chesapeake, I was not aware that there was a contemporary Monacan Indian community of approximately 800 tribal members, based just one hour from the University of Virginia (today the tribal numbers are closer to 1400).
It should be said, too, that the Monacan community also chose to be out of public view, a centuries-old survival strategy in the face of colonial and later state policies.
The Monacans have come out of the long shadow created by colonial era writing and policy, and are now very much a part of the cultural history of the region as well as the contemporary political and cultural landscape.
