filefish   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Filefish (also known as foolfish, leatherjackets or shingles) are tropical to subtropical tetraodontiform marine fish of the diverse family Monacanthidae.
Found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, the filefish family contains approximately 107 species in 26 genera.
Although there are usually two of these spines, the second spine is often greatly reduced; this explains the family name Monacanthidae, from the Greek monos meaning "one" and akantha meaning "thorn".

Monacanthidae is among the Order Tetraodontiformes, which also includes the extremely personable triggerfish and puffers.
Another 30 genera (31 total) are represented in the family Monacanthidae, numbering just slightly above 100 species in all.
Although most filefish have a diet rich in various algae, they will also feed upon most any meat-based food items such as clams, shrimp, or small fish, and even dine on the occasional coral (I should note that some members of the family Monacanthidae are strict corallivores).

Coralreeffish.com: guide to reef fish larvae
As one can imagine, the few species that do this regularly are annoying to us, mainly because they defy the usual interpretations of what is "pelagic larval duration", "larvae", and "settlement".
Some reef fishes in this category are triggerfishes (Balistidae), triplefins (Lobotidae), and many of the Sargassum-associated fishes, to some degree or another: the damselfishes Abudefduf and Chromis (Pomacentridae), filefishes, (Monacanthidae), barracuda (Sphyraenidae), and some pipefishes and seahorses (Syngnathidae) and needlefishes (Belonidae).
Others live among drift algae and have camouflage markings to avoid being eaten by tunas and mahi-mahi (dolphin fish) and other pelagic predators which target floating objects in the open ocean.

These animals are found in the following types of habitat:
Scarids are one of several recently derived families (Acanthuridae, Monacanthidae, Pomacentridae, Blenniidae, Siganidae) capable of exploiting reef algae and small colonial invertebrates.
Reef herbivory was primarily restricted to post-Cretaceous perciformes until these families underwent rapid evolution during the early Tertiary, 50 to 30 million years ago.
