In the summer of 1881, Texas and Pacific Railroad contracted with surveyor John Thomas Monahan, who discovered that the lack of water for the laying crew and their animals would slow down construction of the rail.
Monahans' digging of a water well produced an abundance of good water (250,000 gallons a day) and was instrumental in the success of the city.
Monahans is the hometown of legendary songwriter Guy Clark and it is mentioned on a number of his songs as well as in his 1997 live album "Keepers" during a musical interlude.

In Monahans, a group of youths were playing basketball when a chunk of this meteorite landed with a thud, causing the youths to investigate, according to Allen Martin, news director for the KLBO Radio station, which is located near to the site of the meteorite fragment.
MONAHANS -- Barely two weeks after a well-publicized scare about an impending collision between the Earth and an asteroid, and a few miles from where the real thing happened 25,000 years ago, residents in Monahans Sunday may have had a close call of their own.
MONAHANS -- The day after a rock the size of a grapefruit crashed to the ground near a group of children on Sunday evening, Monahans police found what they believe is a second meteorite.

History: Monahans Sandhills State Park consists of 3840 acres of sand dunes, some up to 70 feet high, in Ward and Winkler Counties, about a half-hour's drive west of Odessa.
The Williams family of Monahans, Texas, also leased to the state approximately 900 acres for the park.
Texas Camel Treks are held at the park.

Thomas William Ward was a Texas soldier and land commissioner, while John Monahans dug the first water well between the Pecos River and Big Spring.
Barstow was named after George Eames Barstow, a brilliant pioneer irrigation scientist from Rhode Island who used water from the the Pecos River to produce abundant and profitable fruit and grape crops until a devastating flood and a succession of droughts stopped things cold.
George Barstow came to West Texas in 1905 and is now buried in the cemetery.

The park consists of 3,840 acres of sand dunes up to 70 feet high and is part of a dune field that extends about 200 miles south of Monahans and north into New Mexico.
Shin Oak (Quercus Havardi), one of the plants which stablizes the dunes, is not a stunted or dwarfed form of a larger tree, but a fully mature plant which rarely reaches a height of 30 inches and bears an abundance of large acorns nearly an inch long and half an inch thick.
Texas Naturalist Roy Bedichek wrote, This Lilliputian Jungle is as much a natural curiosity as the Painted Desert or the wonder areas of Yellowstone."

Since Monahans had insufficient housing for the men who built the Million-Barrel Oil Tank, a tent city rose at the work site southeast of town.
Wayne Long of Monahans later acquired the Tank and the land around it.

A pair of scorched rocks that fell from space onto a west Texas town last year may have delivered a bonanza to planetary scientists that could turn out to be the most significant discovery in years: purple extraterrestrial salt and miniature bottles of primordial water.
Two pieces of the Monahans meteorite, each weighing more than 2.5 pounds (1200 and 1300 grams), smashed to the ground in Monahans, Texas in March 1998.

OK, it's a freshly collected specimen with all of it's mineral salts intact and has a good story attached to it, but $16/g seems more than a little inflated for an H6.
