 Birdwatching trip report - Papua New Guinea - surfbirds.com
Female Scater's Whistler (a bit lower in the winter), Variable Pitohui, Black Monarch, Rufous-backed Fantail, Black Fantail (the last three within 200 vertical metres of each other), Stout-billed Cuckooshrike, Mountain Peltops, and Western Papuan White-eye, were all new trip birds seen up Dablin Creek.
The Bird of Paradise on the way to the lodge was the Superb and we only heard it's harsh call before flushing it; but sudenly a Yellow-breasted Bowerbird arrived to perch in a small tree nearby.
Keki Lodge is in a forest glade, with a twenty bird Lesser Bird of Paradise lek beside, in the heart of Fire-maned Bowerbird country (we only saw one female, perched for ages), and Vulturine Parrot often seen; we saw one.

Moustached Treeswift, Golden Monarch, Golden Triller (Cuckooshrike), Glossy-mantled Manucode (another Bird of Paradise - Bird of Paradise), and Grey Crow were other choice birds seen for the first time on the tour.
After lunch at Ekame Lodge we boated upstream another 20 mins to a mixed habitat of riverside flood forest (similar to the varzeaof the Neotropics) and the more open and larger treed terraces alongside (similar to the terra firmeof the Neotropics).
Back in the forest only Long-billed Honeyeater, Black-sided Robin, Rufous Babbler, White-belied Pitohui, and Dwarf Longbill (was a Honeyeater, now in the Longbill-Berrypecker Family), made a relatively slow morning of it.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Papua New Guinea
An hour spent in the centre of a lek of displaying Great Birds-of-paradise clinched the fact that we were indeed in Papua New Guinea.
Birds came thick and fast after that: Long-tailed Honey-Buzzard, Variable Goshawk, Yellow-capped Pygmy-Parrot, Large Fig-Parrot, Eclectus Parrot, Dusky Lory, Dwarf Koel, Meyer's Friarbird, Variable Pitohui, Hooded and Golden Monarch, three species of Manucode, King Bird-of-paradise, Brown Oriole, Grey-headed Cuckoo-shrike, White-spotted Munia, Red-capped Flowerpecker, Black Sunbird and Pygmy Honeyeater.
The habitat was superb and the forest was alive with birds and we had barely started when we saw a beautiful male Emperor Fairywren.

To his credit he was dead right and altogether this area seems to be quite birdy: Brown-headed Paradise Kingfisher, Hooded Pitohui, Spot-winged, Frilled and Black-winged Monarch, Wallace's Fairy Wren, Fawn-breasted Bowerbird.
The trail is broad and simple to follow and may produce the following birds: Black-billed Brush Turkey, Azure and Dwarf Kingfisher, Rusty and Hooded Pitohui, Eastern Riflebird and Raggiana Bird of Paradise.
Starting from the main picnic area, the Varirata Lookout Trail meanders for about 1.8km to the lookout at the top of the escarpment where it meets up with the road through the park.
