Monbetsu is a sleepy little place but our friends (both animal and human), the drift ice, the bicycle/canoe/camping trips and the holidays in South Korea and Thailand keep things interesting.
Monbetsu's drift ice festival transforms the town into "Iceland" for the second week of February and Sapporo's snow festival, in the first week of February, attracts people from all over the world (including Jackie, Kip's mom!).
Karen teaches at both of these as well as Monbetsu's school for the handicapped and 7 other rural high schools in the Monbetsu area.

I said that Monbetsu had lots of children and lots of grown-ups, but didn't seem to have any young people - they've all headed south in search of work/further education/excitement/things Monbetsu doesn't have - so the city goes dead after dark, because everyone's either at home minding the kids, or at home being minded.
Monbetsu Minami High School is virtually deserted - it has less than 200 pupils in a building maybe twice as big -more modern and better equipped, too- as Monkita.
It _might_ be something to do with white, of which colour Monbetsu has more of it's fair share at this time of year, what with the snow and the drift ice, but it might not.
